Slightly OT, but could that thing be any more of a low-rent rip of the Lens-Align?

Mickey can you please explain to me what does OT means and low- rent rip. Sorry newb here.

I totally agree with what everyone is posting, get out and shoot!. But I think you need to bump up your light source in these photos of the batteries and change your white balance. The camera can't focus properly and photos will not appear sharp in poor lighting or with a white balance that doesn't suit the lighting.

No problems (or NP :-)

OT = Off Topic (which is pretty standard behaviour on most forums, but anyway...)

"low-rent rip" means low-cost ripoff. in this instance, of Michael Tapes' Lens-Align tool.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

kin2son,

The focus looks fine for the lens...

Of course in a perfect world the two out of focus batteries would be equally out of focus.. or the far battery would be a touch more in focus than the front out of focus battery.

just use your Canon 50 1.4 - its a very very good lens. focus more in developing your skills as a photographer (composition, lighting, etc....) and worry less about tiny little differences between these lenses and getting "max bokeh, max sharpness".

+1

Well!!!! Am I glad I happed to fide this thread.

I want a 50 1.4 so did a little research on Sigma and Canon and thought that the Sigma was a better lens and at 77mm filter thread it matched most of my other lenses for attachments etc.

Then found that the Sigma had focusing problems so I put every thing on hold to find out more.

I have two other Sigma lenses 150-500 and 24-70 f2.8 both good lenses.
So after reading this thread and seeing under exposed pictures with apparently no focusing problems even if the OP thinks there is and comments from other users of this lens I am now ordering the Sigma 50 1.4

Thank to everyone for their help in making my mind up.

P.S. and YES I will be doing MFA tests on this lens because due to manufacturing tolerances nothing is perfect out of the box these days

regards Martin

I must be really lucky, None of my lenses need any MFA...even the sigmalux

though my Sigmalux has a focusing problem and needs to go in for calibration...Just not of the MFA-fixable variety

You must be lucky.:) ALL my lenses red band or not need a MFA tweak of some degree, none very big tho.
This is the result of the Sigma 50 f1.4 lens I received last week, it is now back in the hands of the supplier, and I am waiting for a replacement.

Did something look wrong on the rear element? That's crazy.

Once I knew the lens was no good I just boxed it up and got on the phone to the supplier, new one here tomorrow. Very disappointed I want to put this lens through its paces like others on POTN, a good one can produce very good pics.

...sold my Sigma today.
Frontfocus/Backfocus depending on the distance makes me go mad. So unpredictable.
Guess i'm going back to a canon 50 1.4...not that sharp wide open, but the focus hits all the time..
