when i'm in either picassa or lightroom and open them in photoshop?? they don't all look crazy but every once and awhile when i'm viewing a picture in lr3 or picassa and choose edit in photoshop it looks way way over sharp and just horrible but when i close it and go back to the other application it looks normal.

Does LR not save your last used settings and apply then to the next phot you work on? Not sure myself but just an idea.

mine doesn't...you may be able to set it up to do so but i do not. this was a previously edited photo had done nothing to it in...i believe i was viewing it in picassa this time but chose the edit in...photoshop because i just wanted to add my watermark.

Define "crazy." Do you mean just oversharpened and crunchy, or are there drastic color shifts and differences?

To assess the sharpness, make sure you are viewing the image at 100% zoom in each application when you compare the image rendering, as some applications render non-100% views differently from others.

As for color, there may be a number of reasons. THe two screen shots above suggest that it is sharpness and not color that appears to change, but the title bar in the first screen shot notes that you are viewing at 66% zoom.

First and foremost: Compare sharpness at 100% view.

Second: How do you get the image out of LR? If you use "Export": Do you apply output sharpening?

thanks guys..
to kirk.. yeah it wasn't above 100% zoom it was below just fit to screen and it is a larger file than that.

and rene... i'm not even exporting it..you know when you right click on it you can choose edit in...and it will open in another application in this case photoshop and it's normal when i go back to lr.

What happens if you compare at 100% view? It should be identical.

i'll try it but it makes little sense because it's not necessary any other time...i've just seen this a couple times...and i don't know if its on an image that was shot raw and photoshop has an issue with that or what?

Well, if it looks "normal" viewed at 100% in Photoshop, then it shouldn't be something Lightroom is causing.

Try viewing it at different sizes in Photoshop -- like 25%, 50%, etc, and see if this happens at only certain views.

If it looks normal at 100% it sounds like a possible video issue.

Go to the photoshop preferences > performance. Then you will want to check what your GPU settings are and you cache file size are. Both of those have a possibility of effecting the view of am image when viewed at different zoom levels. That said, certain zoom levels may always look slightly off due to the tile cache on your system, especially ones below 100%

What version of PS? Have you tried disabling 3d acceleration? Does the image look wrong at all zoom levels below 100%?
