I'm only familiar with the ones in the Southwest desert (external link), and they are black beetles, similar to a dung beetle, and if you mess with them, they turn their butt towards the threat, poke it into the air and release a visible spurt of some kind of repellent. You can see the orifice it comes out of.

I see Google images shows shieldbugs as stink bugs too though. Never smelled a shieldbug put out any odor though. :)
