I don't care what the price relation is to the Canon 17-40. As long as it outperforms the 17-40 (and it should), that's what I care about.

As far as UWA zooms for Canon FF that accepts filters, the lens I want is the Nikon 16-35 f/4 + converter for Canon FF. As far as I am concerned the optical performance of the Tokina 17-35 should surpass the Canon 16-35L, 17-40L, and compete directly with the Nikon 16-35 (hopefully).

You might as well go for the Nikon 14-24 if you're gonna go through all that trouble of converting to EOS. ;)

i have never heard this brand before...me my self prefer the exisiting dominator camera producers like canon or pentax.

Not too sure but think some of the Pentax lenses are made by Tokina. Hoya owns Pentax and Tokina if I understand correctly.

I can barely imagine this as a serious post, because you REALLY have to work hard to miss the name Tokina on any photography forum.
Just in case: Tokina and Pentax had the same owner (until Pentax was taken over by Ricoh a few weeks ago). Incidentally, this is also the same owner as Hoya filters and Slik tripods).

Well, wasn't it the case with 16-28mm being so highly regarded and almost overhyped lens, just to come out and flat out underperform in all conditions?
I'm now being cautious with Tokinas, even though I've had a pleasure of owning 11-16mm which was nothing short of superb. But I hear people buying and returning their 16-28's right away due to softness, vignetting, and focus issues.

And Kenko filters, macro tubes and teleconvertors.

Just got this lens today. It's better than my good copies of 17-40L and 16-35L in terms of corner sharpness, distortion and flare but purple fringe at 17mm is worse than 17-40L and 16-35L.

Flare performance is better than the 17-40? That's quite an impressive claim. Purple fringing is nothing new for Tokina lenses. Easy to fix, but annoying to have to do it, especially when working with HDR images where it's really critical. Normally with Tokina lenses purple fringing + flare go hand in hand, so it's good to see this doesn't suffer from it so much.

Yeah... that would be too good to be true...

After hours of searching ;) finally found some real world samples...

But impressive sharpness, even wide open... if you ask me...

Looks like decentering problem... or not?

Thanks for clearing that up, I know a tokina flare when I see one ;) Too bad though, flare resistance is a very important feature to me on UWA, since I like to be able to get the sun in a shot (and sometimes front-light with strobes). Still, good to see they continue to crank out good lenses, although I don't really see the added benefit to the 17-40 on this one.

Well, with Canon having the 17-40 there isn't a huge advantage. But the cheapest UWA on the Nikon side is ~$1200 (though it does have VR.)
