I have been using a dslr (7d and L glass) for quite a while now and i am coming up on a trip (leaving next saturday) to Europe for 18 days. I am taking my camera but do not want to carry it around for some of the days we will be gone all day. I will just be taking pictures of monuments and things i find interesting but want a camera thats going to take great picts i know it will not be the same quality as my 7d but want something thats not going to leave me disappointed. I have been looking at the G11 or G12 mostly G11 becuase the only thing that it dosnt have that the G12 has is 720p video which i have no use for. Maybe the s95 will work to. Any other suggestions i want a camera that i can use just like a dslr as far as manual controls. Thanks:cool:

Fricks, there are actually several other threads on the front page here about similar situations.

There have been some other noted differences between the G11 and G12, but for the most part it seems that those differences have mixed reviews, and the differences seem fairly negligible.

If you happen to have an old canon (I don't even think it really matters how old, to be honest) you can give the Canon Loyalty Program a shot - but whether or not you get a fully functioning unit seems to be a bit of hit or miss. At last check the CLP G11's were going for somewhere around $250-260, but they may have changed.

If you want a good (maybe one of the best) pocket cameras you can't go wrong with a S90/95. The S90 can be had for under $300. The G11/12 is of course larger and shares the same sensor with the S90/S95

I would get a S95

A nice feature of the G is the swiveling screen.
You can quickly arrange shots from the floor or overhead.

Fricks....good choice going with the G12. I've had my since Friday and love it, I actually sold all my DSLR gear and now only own the G12. As mentioned the swivel screen is a super plus.

i went to best buy today and played with a bunch and just found this to feel super solid and not feel cheap like some of the others do. How do you like the miniature effect do you find it good or kind of gimiky

I find that the miniature mode works well when used in appropriate scenarios. I think there may be a few threads with some pictures, and there are a few great examples in the G12 Show us your best thread on the front page.

It's also worth noting, or perhaps not since you said that you're not interested in video, that miniature mode works in video mode as well =p

Miniature mode can be accessed by pressing the center button on the radial dial when in Scene mode. You'll have several options to scroll through for the scene setting, one of which is miniature.

Not having my camera with me currently I don't know off the top of my head how to move the focus window around on the screen.

You can probably check out the PDF that came with the camera, but in addition you will probably find that David Busch's Canon Powershot G12 is commonly found to be a great resource by many G12 owners here.
