Your son looks happy.
Looks like the focus is on his fingers.

You're right. I will have to figure out how to keep that from happening.

Nice shot and great colors. Read up on the focus modes. By using the centerpoint only focus point, you would have gotten his face in focus. When you let the camera choose the focus points, it focuses wherever it chooses!

Ah, your new to this! I was new around last November. At first, the terms are confusing, and the results may be a little less than what you expected. (It was this way for me...) But I do like the photo, sure, focus is a bit off, but you can't do much about that. With that, it would've been a pretty decent shot. Sure, I can get finicky with composition, lighting, and crap, but hey, this was an "on-the-moment" shot. If you ever need some clarification on the new aspects of photography that come with buying a dslr, feel free to shoot me a pm. I'll do my best to explain it. And my t2i shouldn't be too different from your t3i, so I can help there too. Good Luck!

I have to know where you got your DS's shirt!!! My 9yo would LOVE it!!!!

Cute shot even with the missed focus. I've had my camera for 2.5yrs and I'm still by NO MEANS an expert ;) Have fun learning and playing with your new toy!

Buy the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. That's where I started. It will help you clear up Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO speed, DoF, etc. And be careful, next thing you know you will want a couple $1000 lenses. ;)

Edit: And they don't focus wherever they want to. My understanding is they focus on whatever is closest to the camera if left on all focus points.

actually... to me it looks like the focus grabbed the left side of the kite (looking at the image) it's the sharpest point in the picture.

Omg..sorry to post then not come back and reply.

randy98mtu- I will will definitely get that book, thanks! No more toys until this one is paid off, but I'm sure I will want them ;)

mom2AnH- I got his shirt when we went to the California Science Center (gift shop) so unless you are in CA it might be hard to find :( but I will let you know if we are going back. I'm sure we will go sometime this summer.
I did try a few photos again today and I noticed certain of the focus points would light up and others wouldn't. I'm not sure what it was set on when I took the picture.

Carlwashere- I was sure there were a bunch of other things everyone could of picked on but didn't, everyone here is so nice. You're hit it right on, it was an in-the-moment shot. I literally turned around and took it quick before the moment was gone. Thanks for the generous offer to help, you might regret it when I send you a million questions...lol
