One of the things in the way of this concept are the huge LCD's on the back of cameras these days. If you want a 3.5 inch wide screen LCD on the back of an SLR, it won't be a small camera.

.

How do you figure?

Check out the Sony DSC-TX7 sometime. It's got a 3.5" (diagonal) touchscreen and it is 3.9x2.3x0.87". The Iphone has a 3.5" touchscreen too, and it is even thinner, but a bit longer than the Sony camera. A screen doesn't add much to the device other than a frame to hold it in.

I'm joining in! I want a NEX-5 style camera but I want it to have an adapter to take EF lenses. AF control of EF lenses would be great but I think I could live without it, aperture control would be sufficient. It would double as a backup body as well as a smaller camera to keep in a small bag (i.e. a Sigma 30 F/1.4 with adapter on a NEX-5 doesn't feel too out of place, and a Canon 85 F/1.8 in the bag would be a nice little creative kit).

Mirrorless? Well personally I couldn't care less if it was mirrorless or not. Assuming AF with EF lenses wasn't possible I'd be using an LCD anyway. But if they can fit a mirror and VF in something the size of a NEX-5 then I'm all for it.

i guess thats the problem with rumor/wishlist threads. they can go on forever and any opinion goes. love the discussion here!

with the advent of companies like lytro, i think these small cameras and the small camera market will never be geared towards the serious "pro." isnt the biggest market in cameras the regular consumers? but there i go...i said "never" in a rumor thread haha

Yeah but then a few yerars ago I and I'm sure many others didn't expect an APS-C sensor mirrorless camera for about $500 like the NEX-5.

I still think a NEX with an adapter and an 85mm f1.8 is barely going to be smaller than a Rebel with an 85mm f1.8. The AF adapter has to pad back in the expected mount depth, and the lens is still the longest part. About the only difference will be the flash bump on the rebel. I agree it would be nice for a backup, but I don't think using EF lenses as primary will make much sense.

I'd be happy with a G13 with an aps-c sensor, or maybe even an m43 sensor, heck maybe even smaller as long as it's bigger than its current sensor's size, plus a bunch of pancake fast primes.

I don't think it HAS to be a giant sensor. Nikon is rumored to be making a 2.5x crop sensor system. 2x crop sensors are really getting quite good. I could see even going down to 3x crop. However, Pentax throwing in a 6x crop sensor in their Q system is not really what I would call desirable.

I'd like to see someone go just big enough that we can get better than LX5/S90 quality and DOF control, but still have very small (Even possibly retracting) lenses.

But that camera has nothing on the back but an LCD. An SLR will need an OVF and buttons. And a touch screen would be bad for an SLR.

Admittedly the Rebel is a fairly small body and I don't own one for direct comparison, but if you google search for side-by-side images there is quite a difference. I have a NEX-5 + adapter on my desk at the moment and on a small prime like the Sigma 30 it's quite a nice size.

I own a 7D and it would be pretty hard to justify owning a Rebel body as well just for when I want to travel a bit more compact.

Besides, more options is always a good thing IMO. :)

edit: found some images, keeping in mind the stupid NEX-5 flash doesn't need to be there:

BUt once you add in that adapter to allow for the proper flange distance, the lens is going to start at the same place the Rebel's does. It will end up the same depth, but a little smaller in the other two dimensions. You are still going to need the same size bag for either combo.

Yeah but in the other two dimensions, and overall bulk it's still very different. And when travelling light with the adapter not attached (i.e. all packed up) the overall kit size is very different. The adapter is about the same size as a Kenko 1.4x, but hollow and light.

I want a small small body for when I jump on the mountain bike and go either through the streets or off road. A small bag (i.e. extra pocket on a camelbak) can fit a NEX-5 + Sigma 30 but I doubt it would fit a Rebel instead (admittedly I haven't tried, but there isn't much room there).

Okay, dismantled, I can see it taking less room. So I guess I can see some advantage. It just seems like you would rather have a dedicated 30mm pancake like the Samsung one. Then you are talking a whole kit that fits inside the footprint of a rebel with no lens. Using a lens significantly bigger than the body while having compactness as a goal, seems counterproductive.

+1 to that

Which is why id take the GF2 + 20mm f/1.7 or the 25mm f/1.4 if i was going to get this sort of thing right now...
