hss not working in AV mode

i have a 430ex flash that wont hss in AV mode
switch it to TV, MAN, it works just fine
the metering says it is correct but it comes way blown out.

shooting with a 7D

Av and ETTL are usually a bad combination, HSS or not.

Take a look at the shots and see what shutter speeds the camera is selecting. If the camera is choosing something faster than 1/250 then HSS is working.

Also, there's a custom function that will lock the shutter speed when you are in Av with a flash attached. Check that CF and make sure you are not forcing the shutter speed to something slower.

Use M mode when using flash. It will make your life easier.
