I picked up a cheap ir filter (Zykkor IR720) to play around with before sending my XSi off for IR conversion. Well, I used my 5DMkII, not thinking about the fact that it would have a stronger IR filter than the XSi, so shots in sunlight were taking over a minute at f/3.5 and ISO100. So now I'm out to try it again with the XSi to see if my results are any better. I think the filter (though a cheap one) is decent enough as far as the quality of the glass, as the center is fairly sharp. Hopefully the next will come out better.

After channel-swapping and some other coaxing in Photoshop:

thanks, the top one is actually the bottom one after a lot of meddling in photoshop.

I think with an older camera (with a weaker ir filter) I'll be able to get better color and sharpness out of the shots. We'll see!

Thanks again!

Try setting a custom white balance next time. Take a picture of the grass and use that for the white balance. That way you have a more workable image if you save JPG. It won't be so red, sort of like this:

I do like the color scheme going on though in your processed version!

Yeah, Canon has significantly improved their hot mirrors in the 50D and 5DII. Even with long exposures using them for lens filtered IR is a challenge.

One thing you might to to improve your images is cover the viewfinder when you shoot. There's a rubber sheath attached to your camera strap that fits over the eyepiece when you remove the rubber eye cup. This will keep stray light from leaking in when the mirror's up during exposure and degrading your capture.
