Dwight - maybe it isn't a system - but speaking only for my self - I find the more I shoot a sport, the quicker I can set myself up at new venues. I have a defined kit I work with, there are certain shots I make sure I get in the first 15 minutes of play, shooting locations to avoid for bad backgrounds, ending up in fewer learning setup shots to start with. Since you have only a handful of songs to shoot, you have to know where the shooting vantage points are, where there lighting dead sports are, etc..... When I shot Bo Diddley - it took me at least 3 songs to figure out the good shooting angles - I would only be getting a feel for the venue when I would be getting the 3 song hook. Anyway, it shows you understand how to do what you do... you may not think about it ... but it really shows. It is more then just having really good equipment, though that helps.

Mark, yes and no. My shooting positions are pretty limited. The big reason that I don't feel I have a system is that the lighting is always very different and I never know what's going to happen. So, yes, I have a "system" that amounts to what lens and ISO I start with and after that it's shoot, shoot, shoot, chimp, adjust, shoot, shoot, shoot.

I can't tell you who I'm going to be shooting over the next several months (I'd lose my job) but it looks like this year ends on an interesting note and the first two months of next year are dynamite! Oh, and it now looks like I'm going to shoot Drew Carey's show ... that will be very different!
