My contribution.

I love my T2i, but I miss it right now. :( I let my parents borrow it for a trip to Italy, and gave them the kit + 70-300.

The 30D might be a great camera, but it's just incomparable in my opinion. And I got a remote shutter (T2i) + ND400 in the past 2 weeks. Can't wait to get it back :p.

Beautiful photo! location?

Hey all,

Seeking some advice and help here. I really appriciate any input. I have a Tamron 200-500mm and a Canon 55-250mm. I notice taking pictures with the Tamron the IQ is nothing compared to the Canon. I figure I must be doing something wrong, but then I noticed that at 500mm image quality is horible but at 200mm on the same lens image quality is decent. That ruled out the possibility of it being a bad filter in my mind.

I've taken some photos here and am laying them out to show my point.

First a photo taken with the Canon at 250mm:

The same photo cropped to 1:1:

Nice amount of detail and a very usable result. I'd expect the same or better out of my Tamron...

And I seem to get it with the lens zoomed out. Here's a 1:1 crop of a picture taken at 200mm:

One from 243mm, uncropped:

IMAGE LINK: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bohh/5882385496/ (external link)

Same photo 1:1:

IMAGE LINK: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bohh/5882386500/ (external link)
243mm (external link) by Bohh18 (external link), on Flickr

So far so good. Then we zoom into 500mm (uncropped):

Yet when I crop 1:1 I get images that are no wear near the 200mm crop or the crops obtained on the canon:

What am I doing wrong? Am I expecting too much or is something set incorrectly?

Thanks for any assistance!

Beautiful photo! location?

Thanks!

This was near the northeast gate of Yellowstone National park. It was incredibly beautiful and the weather was phenomenal (even if it was still the end of winter, in May).

My weekly squirrel posers :)

Btw, I'm digging your wildlife photos. Slowly getting into it myself, though smack dab in the middle of a college campus in Cleveland doesn't help. I found a hawk and its nest last night though. Stopped by today and it wasn't around. Checking it out later, hopefully I'll get lucky.

Absolutely love squirrels.

From what I've learned while researching lens, your IQ isn't always consistent throughout your entire focal length, especially on a larger telezoom.

I came across this while I was deciding between the 70-200 f4L USM and the 70-300 USM IS. Oftentimes, a cropped image of the L glass was sharper compared to the end of the 70-300.

The other reason the 500mm photos aren't as good is because of handshake blur. The longer your focal length is, the more susceptible it is to handshake (or any other kind of vibration).

Your 55-250 has IS, while your 200-500 doesn't have VC (Tamron's IS). Even at 200mm, at a slower shutter speed the Canon will have better IQ/sharpness than the Tamron. At fast enough shutter speeds it won't matter.

Try a test on non-moving subjects. Have your camera mounted on a tripod and then do shots of a stationary subject. You'll notice that the IQ at 500mm should be about as good as a cropped 200mm.

Good luck getting a shot of that hawk! around here there is just to much wildlife to not use it for photo practice :)

RogerC11,

Very nice series of bird photos. Question: What lens did you use?

Thanks,
