The picasa download can also do that (for free).

Thanks for mentioning that!! Never knew that feature was there. Will have to play with it sometime this weekend.

A little OT for this thread, but just wondering what camera do you guys use when you can't or don't want to carry your SLR?
I'm trying to decide if I want an S95, SX230HS or something else. The G12 is nice but not something you can easily fit in your pocket.

You might want to try this new Fuji, it's pretty good and feels nice to use too.

I actually like the uncropped version...I try not to overcrop, which I use to do all of the time when photographing birds (the lens in never long enough for birding). I think you lose so much image quality with cropping too much.

understood.. each person will look at it differently... i agree with you.. but what i have been told is the pic needs to show a story...

so cropped...shows a good fight for the ball...

uncropped ... shows a good fight but eyes get drawn towards player closest and OOF due to F1.8 or so (believe i was trying out Tv mode)..

in addition it shows a person to the right just standing around...

i did similar in soccer... where you have a group of people running with the ball... each team.. cropping in a bit tighter gets the grouping smaller and makes it seem like more action...

in addition posting to flickr and the hockey pics will go to photobucket.. crops down to 1024 on long end....

It doesn't need much work so I only tweaked it slightly.
Not much difference really:

If you're going to crop that much you need a longer lens ideally.
Unless you find some way of getting closer and not shooting through the fence.

your reds are redder than mine.. but the jersey doesnt have bright red though like that...

unfortunately i dont think they make a lens to this specs... im shooting at F1.8 as the light is horrid.... and using a 85mm prime....

so do they make a 70-200 F1.8?

ideally would be for the games to be during the day... and i can use my 55-250.....

trying what i can with what i got... and it is CHALLENGING!!! and i do like it.... LOL

I'm not so worried about the reds. It's the fact that none of your whites look white that concerns me.
The whites seems to have a muddy grey quality. I warmed up the WB a bit and it looks slightly better, at least to my eye.

I don't know anything about shooting sports but I can't believe that you need your aperture to be as fast as 1.8 in order to get the right shutter speed to freeze the action.
That just doesn't sound right to me. The pros aren't using telephoto f1.8 lenses because they don't exist as far as I know.
I know they're using better cameras but still....

Do you have any examples of pics you shot with a telephoto at f2.8 and a high ISO?

By the way, this is an example of one of the indoor shots I took of a handball match the other day. All very soft for some reason:

I understand the need to tell the story, but not at the rist of losing image quality. I, too, crop in sports shots quite often. I just try to find the point where the image quality remains intact. As for the OOF foreground player, I like it...I think the wider view works and my eye still ends up moving towards the red ball. That is just me and I know it is up to the individual how they want to edit...that is what makes this art so enjoyable...variety of interpretation. :)

Here is another image of our cat...taken lastnight.
