Right way to go - get used to handholding it and it is a pretty light lens anyway.

I went the same monopod route that you are thinking about and did get a good one but it just sits in the car. :)

Thanks bobobird you saved me some money. I will just add a 1.4x tc now just need to decide if it is a kenko or canon.

If the Canon 1.4 III version works with the lens then get the Canon. If not, get the Kenko. The advantage of the Kenko is that it will fit any lens but the III version is said to be much improved over the older version and give better image quality.

It does work with lens bobobird but it is way too expensive for me. They said the version II works better with the older IS version so I will settle to that or kenko bit you are right kenko works to any lens and that the canon TC are limited to EF lens only.

Check out mikeatkinson.net/tutorial pretty straight forward in birds photography. Tell me what you think of it.

i bought a monopod and it doesnt get used either... i dont do shots where there is slow speed as I do mostly sports and my lenses have IS.. so no need..

Regarding setup for sports, I'm always sitting on the ground with a monopod. This makes it very easy to remain seated while supporting my 70-200 f/2.8. Sometimes I'll shoot three games in a row, and the monopod makes it much more comfortable. It's also easier to pull my head back and look at my surroundings, then come back to the same view I was seeing in the viewfinder.

I certainly don't need IS at 1/2000 - 1/4000 shutter speeds, but the monopod is a necessity, for the way I work. FWIW, I'm a healthy competitive athlete and have no trouble with the weight of the thing. It's just consistency and comfort -- really just better shots when I have the monopod than when I don't.

Monopod is more for weight management, it's a very useful tool even for sports when using long lenses. Just check out the sideline of any sporting event. I use mine all the time, beats trying to balance the 100-400 with my left arm.

Heck, if you're going to drop 1500 dollars on a lens you might as well throw down another 500 and get the absolute best.

Monopod discussion - depends on what you shoot.

Shooting wildlife/birds/bugs/plants etc you do not have the luxury of sitting down, deciding your height off the ground, the orientation of your lens, etc.

You would also want to avoid any fixture that restricts or harms your mobility. It can be very very dangerous to both yourself and the equipment if you are walking around with a stretched out monopod. Tripping is the most common and try getting 911 to find you!!!

In the countryside - KEEP MOBILE.

Do carry one though if you have a backpack. Always useful in the right conditions but also as a weapon in case you need to chase off some pesky coyote, unleashed dog, etc. But a collapsible walking stick will serve the same purpose and be much much lighter.
