Thanks Bobobird, yes through my checks I gathered that but I can't believe it's that simple ... I'm sure you're right (well I know you're right) ... I think I must try taking a bunch of shots and not look at the preview and try and just rely on the histogram to establish whether I've got the exposure correct ... I think I'm getting a bit confused by high contrast shots like landscapes where there a big foregrounds of dark shrubbery and big bright skies, the histogram then has loads on the left and loads on the right ... I'll keep testing. Thanks for taking the time ... Roger

something that was explained to me in class and helped me alot is this..

he said..
1. look for the brightest spot
2. look for the darkest spot..
3. find the middle of the 2.. and meter off of that..
when i say meter.. that meter when you look in the view finder... try and change your settings to zero it out...

from there.. pan around to the dark and brightest spots you chose... you should not be more than 2 stops over or under exposed.. if you are..you may loose details... you are better off under exposing vs over exposing...

side note.. on the histogram.. i was confused about it and posted a link a bit ago.. someone bookmarked it but i forget who or what site... youtube video and guy was annoying to listen to but he did the best job..

i thought if the histogram showed all far left it was under exposed.. but that is not necessarily the case... the histogram is broken up in 5 sections... going vertical.. but there are also horizontal quadrents.. making something like 255 pieces... so what it does is breaks the image apart and places all these quadrents where they go from dark to light...

so while we think it is underexposed.. it however could be exposed as there are shadows..

i know i didnt explain it well enough... off to youtube to look for the annoying histogrammer!!!!!

Yeah, as an owner of the 2.8 L non-IS, I chose not to spend the extra $250 for the IS when I bought it. Looking at the ISO 12233 chart comparisons, I the non-IS is higher IQ. IS wasn't worth it for me given my intended use (sports).

I am considering a move up to the 2.8L IS ii though, mostly for the IQ, and some for the IS in non-sports settings (in lieu of the top end of the Holy Trinity). Time will tell though -- if the kids get more into hoops or volleyball, I'll probably throw that money into an 85mm f/1.8 and some strobes. But I digress...

I don't see the value in the mark i IS, because of the IQ.

we all shoot differently but i have to say i dont agree with that part..

my neighbor has a 70-200 f4 non IS and he has had cruddy pictures.. i bought a monopod and he borrowed it... and he took pics and said they were SOOOO Much better... so even he says IS is needed for sports... I leave IS on for my 55-250 when shooting soccer... i understand that IS does not remove player movement.. but it does help with shaky hands @ 250mm x 1.6 crop factor.......

just my opinion...

I really just see no use for IS at shutter speeds over 2x focal length.

these are heavily cropped to get a closer look and composition.
