My refurb 7D has 6333 activation... do you think it is a bit too high? Even for a refurb? What do you think?

Even for a refurb? What do you think? Kind of high--could easily be put on a unit within a standard return period. Only you know whether or not it's worth sending it back and getting another. If you do that, be aware that it counts as a separate transaction, and eats into your yearly 3 transaction limit.

Even for a refurb? What do you think? I would consider 6k a bit high, but still barely used. I had a friend who received a 60D with 8k actuations and she returned it for another refurb, the 2nd body had a little over 300. Keep in mind this is hit or miss, your next body could have more than 6K or less. Ken

If you're willing to list the exact steps and links, I'd be happy to add it to the first post.

Out of shear curiosity, do you have anything that indicates that to be the case? I've never heard of a return counting towards your 'three transaction' rule (which itself hasn't actually been confirmed, I've heard of people buying more than three things in a hear, albeit rarely) via CLP.. Those steps are fine, in addition most linux distributions these days have a graphical package installer so you only need to find the package and click to install. For those using Debian you only need:

I used it for many years until I could afford tools like LR & PS Ken

You're misunderstanding. The return is a return. The re-purchase is a new transaction. That would mean you've bought 2 bodies.

Someone still needs to walk through and confirm step by step that there are no issues. Generally speaking, it may be the same process, but if it hasn't been tested, I can't tell people it will work. I may check another distro in a few weeks when I get more time, but I don't really know what the big difference is between one or another. Most people checking here haven't used linux before, and likely won't use it again--so it doesn't matter to them which version they download/use.

One thing though, not sure if this is just me. Tried to connect my 7D to my laptop using a "regular" USB cable (not supplied from Canon) and it was not recoqnized by the computer. However, after I switched USB cable (one from Canon), my laptop recoqnized the camera. Strange... thought that all USB cable is the same...I've used generic cables with my cameras--no problems. It could just be you didn't have a secure connection. Canon's cables aren't proprietary--they're not chipped or anything. Pinouts are the same.
