I cannot get either Fedora or Ubuntu 11.04 to recognise my 60D when I run either OS as a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox.

What can I do about this?

Make sure some other program doesn't have the mount point locked. Umount and then remount your camera and see if that works. It happens quite a bit when I first connect my camera to the usb port

How would I go about doing that? Absolute Linux newb here.

However one other thing I am seeing is that when I connect my camera, VirtualBox does not even report having any such device connected.

Also, is there any way I can actually install Linux in the Virtual Machine (I mean onto the virtual disk created by the VM for the guest OS)? I tried the installer, but thought it might screw me by installing onto the actual Windows drive, so I gave up.

Thanks for this info, I have successfully done it.

Couple of questions:
1. How do I exit from the system - sorry I never tried this before
2. Do I always install gphoto2 everytime I want to check my shuttercount? I rebooted my netbook, tried the shuttercounter again and it didn't work, but I reinstalled it and worked again.
3. Is this accurate? I tried first time and my count was 2765, then I took 20 shots and checked shutter count again and it showed 2766 ???

It can be done on the command line, but an easier way is:

While running your guest OS, click Devices --> USB Devices. There should be an entry like "Canon Inc. Canon Digital Camera [0002] click this and you will get a dialog similar to "You have just inserted a medium with digital photos.Choose what application to launch"

You will have a list of applications that can access your camera. Doesn't matter which you choose because we just want to mount and umount the device, once you click OK, you should get a digital camera icon on your linux desktop.

Right click on the icon and select umount then open a terminal window and run: gphoto2 --get-config /main/status/shuttercounter

it should work for you then if not, verify that you have enabled USB for your virtual image. Open VirtualBox Manager highlight your installation and click settings, in the next dialog box click USB and make sure "Enable USB Controller" is checked.

Here's a decent tutorial: http://www.varunvats.com …as-a-guest-in-virtualbox/ (external link)

For those that are interested, gtkam, has a graphical interface and provides additional information along with the shutter count.

It's just a GUI for gphoto2. It isn't really better, and it doesn't really replace the functionality of gphoto2.

Question, is the gtkam command available at the last steps without having to download/install additional packages?

I tried to run it with a wireless connection and it would not work. My computer is in a heavy mid-tower case downstairs with a 24" monitor and the router is upstairs. Is there any way to make this work on a wireless connection?

Thanks!

Yogi
