I do lots of macro with a tripod and focus stacking without a rail.
Don't even own one. Just focus at the near end, and then change the focus slightly for each shot.

It can be done but a rail sure does make it easier and with better results, especially when you get into the +10 image stacks. Shooting a 20 or 30 pic stack without rails is nearly impossible. Not sure why, but call me JJ.
