I am really confused, I got a local deal on a 5DII + 24-70f2.8L.
I evaluated it and I could probably sell my 7D, 17-50, 30 f1.4, 85f1.8 and go for FF.
My 7D is 6 month old with only 5000 actuation while the 5DII is 2 yrs old and 20 000 actuation.

I rarely shoot sports, mainly portraits, group and cars. I have already owned a 24-70 but found it was not a good focal range for crop, I really think this one is designe for FF.

I am just concerned about going with only one lens (for the moment) and lose the prime i owned...

Um... sure? Sounds like a legitimate move.

Grab a 50/1.8 if you're concerned with losing the siggy 30. I know.. build sucks. But w/ the 5D2's clean iso, you can bump up the iso. It's just 2/3 stop loss of light (though 50/1.8 will be thinner DoF than what you were/are shooting at 30/1.4 currently).

I've got the itch to switch lately too. I agree with Julian. Do it and grab a nifty to get you by until you can start building your primes back up. My thinking is FF will take getting used to, so I probably couldn't say today what lenses I would want if I were FF anyway. Better to switch and see what FL's you like/use most after a few months.

Depends why you use a prime. 85/1.8 on a crop won't be much different than 70/2.8 on a FF if shallow dof is your concern. Since the 5d2 is better than the 7d at high ISO you can crank that up one notch and you'll have similar low light performance.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

I am in the same boat. I just sold my 7D and am planning on getting a 5D II and starting off with a 50mm 1.8 II.. I had it for a while with my 7D and I miss using it because it was so sharp! The bokeh wasn’t as good but tack sharp at F2.8 and pretty sharp wide open.. Sucks its $140 now! I bought it for $98 like 10 months ago. I should of kept my 85mm 1.8 what a mistake that was.. up $50 more to buy now too.

All I can say is this: once you go full frame, youll never go back.

That being said, the ideal circumstance is to have BOTH. A 7D and a 5D2 is a wonderful combo.

I shoot with both... 5DII and 7D. But I need primarily to take sports/action shots. Other times I need the max detail and other features of the FF camera.

For what you shoot, the 5DII might be a better choice.

OP, try to keep the 85/1.8. You'll miss it if you sell it! I'd hate just having a 50mm with FF (I like 50mm a lot on crop, but not so much on FF... just a personal bias).

Canon store online had refurbed 5DII for $1999 recently, if it helps.

What do I know, though... Hey, I think 24-70 is excellent on crop and use it all the time. IMO, it works pretty well on FF too, though.

There is no actual difference in depth of field.... What's different is that with the same lens you will tend to stand closer to your subject with FF, with the result being that effective DOF changes (appears shallower when you are closer). So, real world shooting DOF seems like it's shallower with FF.

Other considerations... FF can do even lower light shooting. A much lower density sensor means its high ISO is cleaner (approx. one stop's worth). And 5DII will still focus... though slowly... about 1 EV lower light... after 7D has given up entirely.

At smaller apertures, diffraction starts to set in sooner with crop camera... f8 or a little larger with a dense sensor like the 7Ds. With FF you won't see it start until f11 or f16. Plus, loss of fine detail due to diffraction is more dramatic or amplified on the cropper as your apertures get smaller, than it is with the lower density sensor of the FF camera.

Good info, Alan. This is the thinking I've been going through lately. The 7D is gear more toward sports and as of now, the closest I get to sport is chasing a 2 year old running around the yard. This does get like a sport, which is one reason I still have the 7D.

Otherwise I am mostly doing candid portraits and some travel landscapes. I think the 5D would be better suited for those purposes. I'm not in a position to make any changes right now anyway, but I appreciate how you sum up the differences here.

Do it, I made the same switch last year and could not be happier. The 7D is a great camera but the image quality is in a different league with the 5d2

Really? My 7D was every bit as good in low light focusing as my 5D Mark II.

I do agree the 5D2 is probably a better choice for the OP based on what he shoots.

After I acquired my 5D MkII I discovered that it will happily be a compliment to the collection of gear. I still grab the 40D when I need more reach and want to use my asp-c lenses (I love my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8!).

I certainly go for the 5D MkII, though, when low-light shooting, and if I had to choose one camera of the three I have, the 5D MkII would be it, hands down. Maybe after I get a 24-70L and a 100-300mm, I might feel a little differently, but for the time being, the results I get using the 5D MkII and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 completely justify it. It's photos at ISO4000 or even ISO 5000 have less noise than my 40D at ISO1250.
