Gave it a try with the 40D and, sure enough, I can shoot using a 720nm IR filter at only about 20-30 seconds. That being said, I also tried using custom WB using a pic of a bunch of tree green foliage and just couldn't get the channel-swapping to work out. And I've worked with it for a bit. The image from the camera is very red and actually seems to be a red monochromatic shot. More red than having used the auto WB.

Hmmm... anyway, I was satisfied with the black and white conversion I was able to get out of it, though.

Any hints on white balance and color channel swapping that would help? I took a shot of some very full green branches of a nearby tree and then set custom WB using that file. Any other input?

Thanks!

Granted, this is from using a higher cutoff filter (830nm on unmodified 50d), but this is from setting a custom white balance. Not necessarily straight out of camera, but exported from DPP without modification:

One thing I forgot to note about the previous image I linked to. That was from a converted camera which has a different default IR look than one taken with an unmodified camera + filter.

But you shouldn't be getting a completely red image. I'll try to dig up one of my old R72 pics and export a jpg unmodified from DPP to compare.

Logicus, when you shoot the foliage for custom white balance, you need to shoot it with the filter in place, at the same exposure settings you plan on shooting your IR in. I generally moved the camera intentionally to get a nice, even blur. Probably not necessary, but it made me feel better! ;-)a

The 40D sensor is the same as my XTi. I found that I got good results shooting at ISO 400, which significantly cut down on my exposure times. Depending on lighting conditions, I could get strong results with exposures ranging from 10-20 seconds. Once you're pushing 30 seconds, noise becomes an issue no matter what ISO you're using. I also found it handy to use Auto Exposure Bracketing. A full stop was generally too much either way, but something around a half stop was useful.

Thanks for the info and tips! Trying again today!
