I spent a big piece of Saturday wandering around a local renaissance faire; Of course, there were lots of good shots to be had!

1) Hoola hoops!

Can't be the renaissance, people aren't covered in animal dung. Nice pictures...

Nah... they're just all royalty. It's amazing how few peasants show up for this sort of thing...

Thanks!

Nice shots!

However, I think they should really have to be authentic. Nothing that didn't exist back in those days. I see plastic everywhere, machined metals, etc.. That'd be cooler.

As long as they don't include the cholera, leprosy, plague, and malnutrition, I'm OK with some inaccuracy.

Actually, most faires have that last going for them already....

There have been a few that tried for authenticity. They mostly went under pretty fast. Tourists don't want to see that: they want to see girls in low cut bodices, guys bashing at each other with swords, and people eating big greasy turkey legs. I find it easiest to take them as light entertainment and just not worry about the historical inaccuracies.

Ah good points! Forgetting that this isn't really about authenticity as it is about selling crap. 8-(

That last one would look really good if it was cropped in a lot tighter all around.

Edit: Saw you had image editing on, perhaps something like this;

Well, yes. But some of what they're selling is "fun", and I didn't feel like I was over-charged for that at this fair.

They actually did have some neat historical stuff there... there was a group from the Higgins Armory Museum (well... from the Higgins Academy of the Sword, which is affiliated with and based at the museum) who did demos and lectures on historical foot and mounted combat, and a falconry talk by a rehabilitator. The woman cooking was preparing historically accurate recipes, and not taking much in the way of shortcuts. She did have a motorized spit turner, but people tend to frown on using dogs or children to do that sort of thing these days... ;-)a

But we've gotten a bit off track, so here are some more pictures!

Historical combat demo people:

(I didn't include these originally because I'm not as happy with the images, but since the subject came up...)

It's commercial, but it's also a fun way to spend an afternoon. And this one was less commercial than most.

I like it! Thanks for the recommendation... I liked seeing more of the pans she was working with, but cutting out the cooler definitely helps more than removing the pans hurts it.

Nah, don't get me wrong, I've been to several Ren Fairs, and they've always been a good time. I was just making chitter chat I guess. ;-)a

I do like the crop that the Dr did too.

Thanks for sharing! 8-)

No problem. As I said, I liked that they had more of the historically accurate stuff at this one, and it was a LOT less commercial than most. King Richard's, for instance (in Carver, MA) has gotten so commercialized that I've basically stopped going.

Thanks for the comments!

I've been to the local Ren fest. several times. Since I see many of the same sights each time I decided to make it a challenge now to try to get photos without any of the distracting backgrounds or tourist. It adds a lot of fun and you'll get some very interesting shots. Close ups seem to be the key. If I knew how I would post some of my images.

That WOULD add challenge! It didn't even occur to me to try, but I'll keep it in mind next time. 8-) Closeups, carefully chosen angles, and a really large aperture would all help, I think. Hmmm.....

If you don't know how to post images, there's a set of instructions here. Also make sure you check the posting rules, which are here.
