Which lens should (or could) I use for macro photography?

I know this is probably a somewhat strange question.. but given my current list (not including the 28-135, it's receiving a new home tomorrow), if I were needing to do any macro photography, which of the lenses in my sig would be suitable?

Thanks!

Your 50mm with extension tubes would probably make due, or your 70-200 with a close up filter. I haven't really used close up filters much so I can't vouch for them though.

I would go with the Sigma 17-50 with a reverse ring adapter or the 70-200mm with an extension tube.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

How much magnification do you want? And what kind of macro? Small insects? Large insects? Flowers? As mentioned your best bet is probably the 50mm with a set of extension tubes.

Depends on how much magnification you want, but right off the bat, Id suggest the 50mm with extension tubes.

Yeh! like the canon 100mm f 2.8 macro. Good macro with some working distance between the lens and the subject. This point is often overlooked until folks find that for 1:1 they are on top to the subject and if its alive, it gone.

What's your definition of macro photography? 1:1 lifesize? Something like the dragonfly shot above, which is not 1:1? Insects, flowers, or jewellery? The answer will depend on the above to at least some extent.

A full set of Kenko extension tubes (68mm) and your 50mm lens will give you around 1:1 lifesize, but pretty small working distance.

The same tubes with your 70-200 will give you more working distance, but not 1:1, but would be pretty good for flowers and dragonfly type shots like above.

And then when you decide you do want a "proper" macro lens, and you will :D, go for the Tamron 90 :D
