I think I bought a fake, but I would like to verify, so I took photos of both the new one and the original that came with my camera, can you guys tell me if it is a fake or not?

also, what's with the really small upload attachment size/resolution?

No idea as I have never even seen a real LP-E8 battery pack, but where did you buy it from?

Check the photos here (external link). It might be ok.

The file size limit is small because it's hosted by Pekka, the owner of the site, and large files would take up a ton of space and cost more. Most people link and use another site to host their photos.

According to Amazon, it looks fake. Should be "Made in China" and say Canon, inc

The price/where is not a good indicator of if it's fake or not, as these seem to be out of stock at most places, causing some price/availablilty confusion..

those amazon pics would be what I am interested in, except they look like they were posted by a clueless person who diden't even compare the same side of the battery

here are the pictures I took, the first 2 are of the original battery that came with the camera, while the 3rd and 4th are of the suspect fake

That battery you bought is a fake. Return it and get a real one.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Canon probably outsources the manufacture of batteries and I bet there are variations from one batch to the next and from one sub-contractor to another.

The Amazon "fake" description doesn't necessarily hold water... Your own known OEM has the same "Made in Japan, Assembled in China" and "Canon Inc" that the Amazon complaint says indicate fakes. Yet you know yours came with the camera and is genuine.

On the other hand, if they're right and the one shown on Amazon is a fake, then your newly purchased one has the same 200912 date code (2009 seems old now anyway, for a battery), as well as the same "BKA" code (manufacturer? lot?) in the righthand corner.

There were a bunch of "Honor" cameras on eBay for a while... That's a rare French-made camera from the 1950s that sells for a high price to collectors. These were actually cheap Russian cameras relabeled... They even faked the Japanese made lenses on them. Problem was, they were too lazy to change the serial number, so all the cameras and lenses had the same serial number! Dead giveaway, even if you didn't know the other red flags.

I don't have any need for LP-E8, but have bought and used other types of generic batteries in cameras over the years, for as much as 80% or more savings over the OEM. The generics seem to work ever bit as well and have lasted for many years, some even seem higher powered than the OEM.

Chances are they are all made in one or two or a few factories anyway, then have different labels slapped on them... at least when they aren't fakes pretending to be OEM.

The LP series batteries are supposedly harder to fake, contain some add'l circuitry... do they funcion fully in the charger and camera? I do use a bunch of LP-E6 that are OEM, when I got them there weren't any knockoffs available yet.

I worry a lot more about fake memory cards, than fake batteries. But if it bugs you, send it back and shop around.

it worked in the camera, but I only used it to take 2 pictures of the "real" battery - I don't trust it (yet)

I finally found where to contact canon about it:

counterfeit@cusa.canon.com (external link)

so I sent them the pictures and will find out soon hopefully

It look fake, and I believe Canon won't change the battery that style. The upper side should only labeled 'Canon'.

There are legitimate variants of official Canon batteries. Different factories, different stampings. No comment on this particular battery :D
