I have no idea if it's a fake one or not but why this post is a poll?

I find it weird to have a poll for such a question. This is to find out the real answer not the opinion.

Why would anyone bother buying Canon branded batteries when viable alternatives are available for a 1/3 the cost?

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.

There are enough differences to at least make me suspicious. Just checked all my batteries. I don,t know if they are fake, but they do work well.

If you want real Canon batteries then you need to buy them from real Canon retailers. Otherwise it's the luck of the dice when you're dealing with 3rd party sellers.

I agree with this with respect to the earlier, simpler battery packs such as the very common BP512/511 series... The clones of those have been every bit as good as the Canon OEM, at far lower price. I never bought "fakes"... The various 3rd party of this type I bought over the years didn't try to pass themselves off as Canon OEM at all. Worked fine. Still do in fact. Wouldn't be surprised to learn they were manufactured in the same factory as the OEM (which I'd bet Canon outsources anyway).

With some of the more recent LP series (Li-ion) cells, there is additional circuitry and special charging requirements. For example, for a while the 3rd party clone LP-E6 could not be charged in Canon chargers and if you opted for them you had to buy a different 3rd party charger to use with them. And the new, expanded battery info feature of the camera wouldn't work right... you got somewhat less detailed or no info about state of charge, number of clicks, battery health, etc.

Now a couple years down the road, I think the 3rd party manufacturers have reverse engineered LP-E6 and it's possible to get pretty fully compatible cells.

I don't need or use them in any of my cameras, so I don't know their features and have had no reason to shop for replacement options, but understand the LP-E8 being discussed in this thread were intro'd relatively recently... in 2010? So I might still be a little concerned about knock-offs, but imagine they will be a viable alternative soon, if not already.

3rd party batteries are OK. 3rd party batteries that try and look like the real thing is bad news!

The questions are:
Was it bought as a genuine Canon battery?
What was the cost?

We are still waiting for these answers.

just by looking at how the information is printed on it, it looks fake to me.

buying a 3rd party battery is one thing. buying a battery that says its OEM but isnt is another.

I want to identify it based off its looks, not from where I got it - don't judge a book by its cover

and I am posting to let you guys know that Canon responded and said that it was a fake

Thank you for your email and images. From your images, we have concluded that this item is COUNTERFEIT.

Please refer to the information on Canon USA's anti-counterfeiting microsite for the potential dangers in using counterfeit batteries.
