The white letters on the buttons are already wearing off (ie Menu is worn completely off). I have had this camera for about6 months. Ayone else experiencing this?

Not yet....I've had my G12 the same length of time. I've used it on a daily basis. Wonder if it's an isolated case or a pattern problem ?
I also have two Pentax DSLR's...one a 2007 K10D, which must have many, many thousands of shutter actuation's.
The white lettering on this camera is unchanged from the day I started using it....it looks absolutely showroom...so I would think that white lettering should not wear off another quality camera like a G12.

I had that problem with my G3. The cause was rubbing the side of the camera bag. When Canon repaired my G3 (after it was dropped) they also replaced those buttons. Since then, for the G3, then G9 and now G12, I also wrap the camera in something before putting it in a camera bag and have not had any problems. The soft slipcase that the G9 was shipped in has been ideal for protection but an old sock works well also. (Not to be tacky, I used a white sock and trimmed it neatly!)

Maybe that's why my button lettering seems to last. I use a white cotton handkerchief to cover the monitor and back when the camera(s) are in their cases.

I've had my G12 for just over 8 months, and the lettering on all buttons is still bright and clear...

Mine are fine too, but I don't use my camera a lot. It's in my purse 24/7 though, not in it's camera case.

also about 6 months, but no single sign of wearing of anywhere. as tiny123 said, are you certain you have the genuine camera?

The lettering on my G9 and G11 looks brand new. I store/carry them in cases that fit the cameras.

Counterfeit G12?

Is this question in jest? In all the statements, comments, questions, etc. about the Canon G series, this is the first time I've come across the concept of "counterfeit". It is unclear to me why (or even how) someone would go about making a counterfeit G12. Am I just naive?

Is it possible that your hands were exposed to some kind of solvent that may have stripped the paint? Some chemicals can be deeply embedded in your skin and though you wiped them dry, are still present. As an auto tech I have this problem and must thoroughly scrub after a days work or risk transfer to things I dont want stained or damaged. Maybe you are storing it in an area with chemical contaminates in the air?

Just taking a couple swings at it.

Mine has been used heavily without wear, and I think mastertech01 has a good point. Sorry to hear that you have been unlucky =(

I have exactly the same issue. The text on the menu button is almost gone after 6 months of average use. (Only the M is still visible). All other buttons are still fine.

I think you might be on to something. It could have been either suntan lotion or that alcohol hand sanitizer...were were in Disney World and I am now thinking that must have been how it got wore off.
