This has to be a scam or the lens is hot (even if they claim to have the receipt). If I didn't already have one I might be tempted to take a look just for kicks.

Current price on B&H web site is $4999.00. However the lens shows up as temporarily unavailable (I'm sure due to the Japan mess).

He's asking $2000 and they usually sell around $4000 - 4500 used.

Could be true, not sure if the lens is broken or not.

You're in Greenfield, the seller is somewhere in Indy. Send him a note and see if he is willing to meet somewhere, allow you to put the lens on your camera for a few test shots first. IF the lens is up to par...GRAB IT QUICK! :D

If not...c-ya! ;)

What can happen if the lens is found to be stolen? I suspect the buyer would be out the lens and all the cash paid for it.

It might be interesting to see what the seller has, but I'd steer clear of the probable scam.

Almost impossible to be true. Anyone who bought that lens new knows something about gear or has money to burn. If they have money to burn, then why are they screwing around with Craigslist?

So assuming they know something about lenses, they would also know how they hold their value and the many possible outlets where they could get at LEAST $1,000 (maybe $2,000) more on a fully functioning lens by simply walking into the nearest camera shop.

The receipt piece gives one pause, but it doesn't pass the BS test. If you meet this guy do it at a police station with at least 2 officers with pistols drawn;)

Here's what can happen:

Great story and a very interesting read (50 Pages), but I wouldn't count on it turning out as well as it did for the Bucketman.

If you do decide to meet up, I would not arrive carrying cash - arrange to meet a bank and make your withdrawal after you see what you are buying.

At least have the boys in blue check to see if the lens is stolen while you're meeting at their place.

Of course it's too good to be true.

The answer always is, and will always be the same.

Would sure love to find a buy like this on a 300L f2.8, but I doubt this is legit. Have seen this lens go for $4000 used.

I have experience with rebuilding these lenses and this is almost certainly a bait and switch scam or something like it. Just because he has a receipt doenst mean its the lens that was purchased. The serial numbers are VERY easy to switch. The only way to know for sure is to open it up. I would pass if I were you. If you do wind up looking at it, make sure all of the functions work, move all the switches and confirm all functions. Make sure the manual focus is smooth throughout its range. Make sure the IS works both "close up" and at distance. Good luck.
