If I focus on one kid the other gets a little out of focus and if I decrease the aperture (or increase the f number) I don't get the background blur. Any advice will be really helpful. Thank you.

Your best bet if you dont want to increase your depth of field is to get the faces on the same focal plane. Pose them so that their faces are equidistant from the camera. Otherwise close down the aperture.
