hi
i have just bought the above lens and have been snapping away
however i am not very happy with the results.
the images are very soft, not hat i was expecting
the shots were taken hand held on a sunny day, so fast shutter speeds
should i be worried or do i need to brush up on my technique

thanks

We need some samples to view with Exif info. Most likely your shutter speed is too low.,

Other than posting the photos what do we learn from them? We all know that it is a great lens.

I felt the same way about mine, then I micro adjusted it (it needed +7) and now it's amazing! The pics are super sharp and great color. Also, I had to remember that on a crop I needed to keep shutter speeds over 1/400. I now love this lens!!

I had the exact same experience, mine tends to be soft focussed wide open on my 40D (no micro adjust), but absolutely sings on the 1D3 with +10 MA.

Definately worth checking out whether yours is front/back focussing, I believe the 50D has micro adjust.

Thank you, mrgooch, for your important comment. I thought something can be learnt from the posted photos (although the drastic degradation due to posting restrictions) - The lens is very nice even wide (or almost wide) open, and good resolution can be achieved even with slower than the rule-of-thumb shutter speeds. They were taken "hand-held", in the field. Implicitely, they meant to convey to the OP that maybe it's not the lens, but - I dare to speculate - something is due to his technique, or with the lens-camera adjustment, and that we can be more clever if he posted some examples (with EXIF).
