My first foray intonthis lens a year ago produced a lot of blurry images and a few good ones. Yep. Without IS, you need steady hands and good technique to get good clean shots. I try to stay at 1/80 or faster. I think the rule of thumb is 1 / focal length x crop factor. On my T1i, that basically means 1/80 or faster. With steady hands and good technique, you might be able to pull off 1/60 or 1/30.
