I know that 50 1.8 is very sharp for the price but my copy is not so sharp wide open and also it has front focus.
how can I solve front focus issues on my 550d ?

you can send your 550D & 50mm into Canon repair - tell them the pairing gives you front-focusing, and they will adjust it.

or purchase a body with a focus microadjustment feature and you can do it yourself.
Examples include 50D, 7D, 5D II, 5DIII, 70D, 6D(?)

I have both.

got the 50 1.8
thought I wanted a bit wider, so I bought the 40
sold the 50
1 tr later bought a used 50
been trying to sell the 40 for over a year....

The 50 is fun and sharp enough for me at f/1.8

The 40 is plenty sharp at f/2.8

both are good for close-ups or with ext. tubes.

I suggest the 50.
