Very good thanks for the info. I have a question. I have polarized filters on my other lenses, do any of you use a polarized filter on your 50mm. I think I may get one. Thanks.

Circular polarizers our situation dependent, not lens dependent. If the look of the photograph you want to take requires a circular polarizer, use a circular polarizer. The image quality from this lens is more than good enough to justify using a circular polarizer… If that's what you're afraid of.

ok well thank you for the info. I use them on my other lenses as protectors and I like the way the pictures come out with them verses without.

Oh… I see what you're asking. I think you are talking about a UV filter, not a circular polarizer. Circular polarizers are not for protection; they are for increasing saturation and killing glare. Yes, it would offer protection but most people use a UV filter for that. I personally wouldn't put a UV filter on as protection because the lens is so cheap. Any decent UV filter that will not degrade your image quality will likely cost as much as the lens. So unless you find yourself in a situation where you are highly likely to damage the front element of the lens, I would'nt even bother.

Ok thanks for the info. I dont think I will be getting the uv lens. But I like how the polorized lens work. I can tell the difference with my others, so I will probably pick one up for my 50. I have been busy so I will post some pictures as soon as I can. Thanks again.

What's the difference between an older EF 50 1.8 and the newer II version?

I just picked up an older film EOS camera that had a 50mm 1.8 on it at a thrift shop, bought it just for the lens so I can now join the nifty fifty family. Tested it last night on my 60D and it seemed to work just fine, will be playing around with it and getting my mind out of the "zoom" mentality and back to non-zoom mode.

I have the older version too. Optically, I think they're pretty identical, but the older one is much better built. It's a little noisy, but I'll take that trade off for the build quality.
