I had a 70-200 2.8 but didn't want to take it to the zoo because it would be too heavy to lug around, so I took the 55-250 instead. It's a great walk-around lens, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results, since I've rarely used it before. I actually took it out again a few days ago. I'm currently looking to buy a 70-300 L, which will likely become my primary lens. But I'd definitely recommend the 55-250 if you're not looking to pay for L glass.

I haven't done much night shooting at all, so I can't definitively comment on good lenses for that, but if I were I'd probably use my 50mm 1.4 for the aperture or the 55-250 just for the IS, depending on what I was shooting. But I'd research the lenses more if you're shooting at night.
