I'm generally a sports shooter but my wife called me to the back yard today to take a look at this bird. I took my camera and snapped a few shots. A facebook friend identified this as a red shouldered hawk. Is he correct? Anyway, it was fun to capture images of a big bird in our back yard!

youre pretty lucky to
1. have a red shouldered hawk in your backyard.
2. be a photographer and be able to capture it.

good job.

Nice. Can't hardly complain about THAT opportunity :) Love the "look" you're gettin' in number 2.

Indeed, Lucky to see one and have it not fly off when you pointed at it, beautiful Red Shouldered! Well done..

Thanks, all! I was indeed lucky to get these shots. I did have a little advantage, however. I shot them with a 400mm 2.8L lens and I cropped them a good bit from the original. In other words, I was a pretty far distance from the subject. Even at that, the hawk turned and looked at me after just a few shots, ruffled his feathers, then promptly flew away.

After taking these shots I do believe that I need to do a little micro adjustment in the camera for this lens. I don't think that they were as sharp or in focus as I think they should be.

Thanks to all for your comments!!
