Nothing wrong with pentax. I shot pentax when I first got into photography. I have a lot of great photos from my old k10d and k20d.

Hi entrefoto,

There was a similar thread to this running a few months ago that you might want to take a look through (I commented there as well)...

All Sigma Lenses - Anyone? - Canon Digital Photography Forums:
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1019749

...I don't get compensated by Sigma nor am I a professional but I currently have 11 of their lenses in my lineup and they all serve me well for what I've selected them to do for me.

My oldest lens, the 80-400mm OS, has gotten quite a bit of rough handling and use over the past 6 years and it still hasn't shown any signs of the peeling finish issue that some folks have documented (...that I were to take a guess, I suspect that the peeling finish is most probably caused by letting the lens bake inside in a hot car or in the sun over extended periods...the down side of black lenses being their inherent ability to absorb heat rather than reflect it.) When using my tripod-mounted long telephotos on sunny days I do resort to draping the setup with a cloth to help keep the system becoming too hot to handle! But I've always done this more to help mitigate internal thermally induced optical aberrations than for any other reason! Regardless, the newer finish should negate the issue over time.

As for AF issues, my experience has been that I've seen more complaints about Sigma lenses and focusing issues on Canon boards than on Nikon boards. Using my 80-400mm again to make a point, I found that after years of shooting with it on a 30D that I really needed to learn what the camera's AF could do for me and what it couldn't...and this was true also whether using the older Canon 75-300mm IS HSM or the more recent Sigma 120-300mm EX DG non-OS. The camera always seemed to have an easier time finding focus at closer distances (oh, say, less than 200 feet or 60 meters) than when shooting at a distant tree line or further. It always seemed the that the shorter the focal length (oh, say, less than 150mm) the better the success rate of acquiring an acceptable distant focus...probably due as much to the camera's (in)abilities as to the lesser angular resolution of lower magnification at the sensor...not saying much about Canon's AF! Thumb-tweaking infinity focus through a crop viewfinder was never a fun or accurate solution. The 30D required a high-contrast subject to function properly at infinity using long focal lengths.

Interestingly, with the arrival of the 7D to my lineup I found a noticeable improvement with long-distance focusing using AF. In fact, the 7D seemed to also solve Canon's AI Servo issues for me (it was significantly more miss that hit on the 30D!), now I regularly use the rear AF button in Servo mode and get a much better keeper rate for the efforts! Having taken some time to reshoot with my variety of my telephotos on the lens-critical 7D I've come away with a greater respect of the capabilities of the Sigmonster, the 120-300mm and, yes, even the 80-400...too bad they never released an HSM version of that one!

Anyhoo, hopefully some of this was helpful?!

:)

...and I now understand why Canon's L tele lenses are white, and not black.

A good photographer can take extraordinary photos anywhere, with any camera and any lens while a mediocre one will take mediocre ones everywhere, with every camera and every lens.
Never limit yourself with what others think you should do. Shoot what you find interesting, exactly the way you want to.

I've got the 150 Macro and the 50/1.4. Considering the 85/1.4.

They perform better than the equivalent Canon, and are cheaper too.

The 150 makes a sweet little tele, if you can keep the shutter speed up.

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.

I don't think anythings wrong with it, but it does take some self-confidence.
