Hi. I am thinking of upgrading my camera. At the moment I have a Canon 1000D with a kit lens and Sigma 70 - 300mm lens. Any suggestions welcome. A friend suggested the nikon 3100D. I would like something that is good in low light and not too pricey.

Without knowing your budget, it's difficult to recommend anything. Which Sigma 70-300mm do you have? Is it the APO version? You may be much better off upgrading your glass first.

"Everything will be alright. I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
Gear: EOS 5DMKII; EOS 400D (infrared converted); Canon 24-105mm f/4 L; Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX; Canon 70-200mm f/4 L; Canon 135mm f/2.0 L; Pentax SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 with EOS adaptor, Rokinon 14mm f/2.8; only enough knowledge to be a clear and present danger to society.

I would recommend to add some glass and open some doors for new things...try to experiment and see which branch of Photography you wanna go...From then on, you can add some glass then maybe after a year or two I bet you would be able to out grown your camea then upgrade to a newer body..

I doubt if there is a body that is not too pricey that would work significantly better in low light than the one you have.

Your answer is really likely to be some combination of:
- better technique;
- using flash;
- using faster lenses, possibly f/2.8 zooms, or perhaps primes.

If your subjects tend to be static, using lenses with IS, or the equivalent, may also help.

What do you like to shoot, and which lens (kit or Sigma) do you use most?

The Nikon D3100 is certainly a good entry-DSLR performer, but then again so is the T3i, etc.

For every fault one can attribute to Nikon, I can attribute one to Canon. Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses.

I'm very brand-agnostic, if you haven't guessed already ;)

I love to shoot animals, plants, birds. I use the sigma most of the time depending on what I am photographing and the distance.

Thanks I will seriously think about all the advice given.

Hrm, thanks. I don't know what your budget is, but it might be difficult to find an upgrade that isn't at least somewhat pricey.

If you want, upload a few photo examples that you're not impressed with, so we can see what exactly bothers you about your current setup - it may just be you need to work on technique, post-processing, maybe get a flash setup going, etc.

I don't think there would be a significant bump in image quality going to something like a Canon 70-300 (unless you're talking 70-300L, which is expensive).

You might consider the 70-200 F/4 non-IS. It's about $550 or so used, but is pretty darn sharp. Of course you lose 100mm off your focal length now, so I'm not sure if that's an option, but it's f/4 constant, which means 2x the shutter speed you're at when zoomed out and at f/5.6

I thought for sure many people had a standard response that they just copy and paste when never given enough info. "What do you shoot, what is your budget, what makes your current camera no good, etc". You know, all the stuff that always seems to be left out...
LOL!

Get a Canon and enjoy POTN, the best forum on the nets!! :)
