hi everyone

i recently bought a 17-55mm f2.8 which is a lovely lens however, used a 35mm f1.4 last week on my 7d and it just felt so much better to use and i think it would give my photography a different edge. not long a go i bought a 50mm f1.8 and really do like it hence getting a positive feel for primes and thinking of going down the 35mm route.

admittingly i went for the 17-55 for the simple reason that it fitted the void in my current lens line up but i think the 35mm would actually work better for me. primarily i shoot people (indoor and outdoor) and cars and it would probably be used as my general walk-about lens for the time being until i have more funds for a lens with a little more reach.

so question to ask is, any other owners gone down this route?

I'd go 24Lmk2 for a 1.6 crop. I used a 7d with 24L and really liked the focal length compared to a 35L on crop 1.6.

Lenses are tools so more the merrier. If your following a fast paced event a zoom is a valuable tool.

24mm and 50mm seem to be a nice compliment to a 1.6 crop.

Zoom is fun and very practical; but prime is just additive.

Canon 5D3 + Zoom (EF 17-40L, 24-105L & 28-300L, 100-400L II) & Prime (24L II, 85L II, 100L, 135L & 200 f/2.8L II; Zeiss 1,4/35)
Sony α7r + Zeiss 1,8/55 FE

Since you say that you just recently bought the 17-55IS, I'd suggest you keep it for a while longer before deciding to replace it with a prime. It works great for all of your primary subjects (people and cars). The last car show I attended, I took the 17-55, 35, 10-22 and 135 with me and the 17-55 was used at least twice as much as the other lenses. It's a very versatile lens with a very useful range that can produce very sharp images. What more can you ask for in a lens?

Canon 7D, 5D, 35L, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 135L, 200L, 10-22, 17-55, 70-300, 100-400L, 500D, 580EX(2).
Sigma 150 macro, 1.4X, 2X, Quantaray 2X, Kenko closeup tubes, Yongnuo YN685(3), Yongnuo YN-622C-TX. Lots of studio stuff.
