Driving along the coast a few months ago I pulled off at Dana Point and stopped at a rest stop to sit by the ocean for a bit. Walking through the parking lot I started hearing the weirdest sounds. I thought there was a kid somewhere near by playing with some kind of odd toy, but after looking around there was no one. Then I happened to walk under a tree where these weird big birds were and discovered they were the ones actually making the sound. I grabbed my Canon S95 and did my best to keep a steady hand, but more wanted to capture the audio. I have never heard anything like these birds and I have been a bird lover my entire life. Id love to know what they are. Thanks all in advance.

Here's my poor quality video. (external link)

It sounds like baby herons or egrets, and the white bird that flew looked like a Snowy Egret.

Wow, we have lots of egrets where I live but they are always off in the distance and solitary birds, I've never bee. Close enough to one to hear what kind of sounds they make. Weird.

At first I thought they may be Night Heron chicks but looking closer they aren't dark enough. It seems that they are Snowy Egrets and that they probably just had a feed from the adult bird nearby and didn't quite get their fill. Nice video, thanks.

There is a protected (state-protected) egret nesting tree right by the Dana Point harbor, I'm sure that's where you were! It's a tree in the front yard of a house. There are hundreds of egrets that use this tree, it is loud, but illegal to cut down. That's what you must have been hearing! (I'm a Dana Point local)

Thats pretty cool, but it was very close to the shore and in the parking lot of a rest stop/scenic area. Im pretty sure it was right here: LINK (external link)

Also, I should note that near this tree there is a scenic look-out spot (Labeled as Compass Rose on the map). It's on a cliff overlooking the ocean. It's hard to tell unless you go to street level view. Also, if you look at the tree, I think you can see an egret!
