If you were still learning your way around a new camera and took a bunch of pictures of a friends kid (with permission) and the pictures were just o.k. (nothing special). And you just take pic's for fun anyway.

And that friend posted them online without saying who took the pictures or at least saying that they didn't take them.

Would you think that was strange?

Did you give the images to said friend with any guidance at all as to what they could or couldn't do with the shots?

Your friend isn't a photographer. She is thinking these are pictures of my kid, look at my kid. She isn't thinking these are an example of photographic skill, so look at how good I am at taking pictures. Like the above said, if they aren't good, be glad she didn't say who took them.

My friends and family do this all of the time with my photos. If they're pictures of their kids then I don't mind at all. If it's Facebook they're posted on then I might make a comment about how I shot the pictures.

If they posted them on Facebook, just tag yourself in all the photos and comment that you are the photographer.

I've done that before too.

Thanks for the responses.

Good idea about tagging/commenting on the photo (it is Facebook)

Nope, didn't give her any direction on what she could do with them. I'm not mad about it or anything, just more curious of how everyone else feels about situations like this.
Now maybe if there were some "great photo" comments then I might be a little disturbed...lol

She only had a camera phone with her. I'm flattered she liked them enough to post them. Other than the lighting not being that great, I did capture some awesome expressions on his face.

If I took the pictures as a favor, it would not bother me at all.

If they did me the favor of letting me practice on their family, I wouldn't worry about it unless they later tried to actively claim THEY took the shots. Otherwise, let it flow :)

My sister-in-law has done this to me quite a few times. I have taken photos at family events and have sent them to her and my brother and then she posts them on FB with no mention that they are my photos.

I have never said that she can't but it has very mildly irritated me that she does this. She is a web designer and if I used stuff that she had designed without giving her credit, she'd be quite miffed!

This is a really tricky area and I would say to the OP that to either tag yourself as the photographer or speak to your friend about tagging you as the photographer. It's really not a biggie but it is nice to have your work acknowledged.

if you're friend is just sharing them on something like facebook then i see no problem...
admittedly, people have done this with my shots (reblogged. no permission. no credit) and it used to irritate me but now i just take it as a compliment. that my work is good enough that someone wants to steal it :)

I would say that 99% of the people out there posting photos on facebook could care less about the quality of the photo. To be completely honest with you, don't take it as a compliment when she posts those "average" photos that you took of her kid... All she sees is her son... There's a good chance that she'd post them even if they were totally out of focus and blurry... it's still her son.
I don't even know how many times I have seen other peoples facebook photos and told myself "wow.. that pic is totally out of focus and cropped all funny." but it doesn't matter because they posted it because it represented an event in their life...

I think a lot photographers believe that every photo ever shared on facebook must be of a certain quality when in fact the most important part of a facebook photo is what the scene is all about and what it meant to the poster.

I would pretty much expect that they get put on facebook. If I were getting paid for shooting it might be different.
