Purchased my 60D about a month ago, but due to work schedule and miserable weather I am just getting out to use it. This is my first try at close up using the 60D and 18-135mm kit lens. Identification help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A skipper I believe, but would need to know your location for a more specific identification.
- good work for the straight lens. Wont be long that you will want to get closer :-)

cheers, Paul

Thanks for the comments. I'm actually located in central Ohio.

Would my 70-200mm f4L work well with extension tubes or would a macro lens be better?

Thanks for your input.

It looks to me like it is a Silver-spotted Skipper....which ranges over most of the US (except for Nevada and southwest Texas).

As an owner of a 70-200 f/4L, extension tubes, and a 100mm f/2.8L macro IS, ... the macro lens is much better, hands down. But, more money, of course. The tubes added to the long lens just make it too dark/slow for me.

The 70-200 is a great lens, but the 100 is superb for macro, and I frequently add one or all three tubes to it as well.

BTW, nice shots of the Skipper, especially the second shot.

Go extension tubes first. The look at getting a macro, like the 100mm. I now use my tubes on the 100mm, so there is no redundancy. I now even add my 1.4x to the mix.
Check out LordV's sticky under Macro Discussion.

Ah yes, I almost forgot about that; I add a 1.4X TC to the combination as well from time to time.

And another +1 to the comment about LordV; Brian is one of the premier macro shooters on this forum. I've learned a lot from him.
