Maybe some of the ladies could start a separate but related thread "Bikini Bikography", but then I'm afraid all interest in this thread could die...:)!

A story about biking:

Two of the guys on my baseball team are paramedics, so we hear all the good stories. This afternoon a 40 year old guy went out for a bike ride. All decked out in his spandex and fancy shoes. Went riding on a county road, which is the norm here. Was riding crouched over, using his arm support things, head down. A truck had stopped on the road and was waiting to turn left. This cyclist did not see the truck and rode straight into the back of it. Put a huge dent in the tailgate, and broke is neck in two places. (C1 and C4 vertebrae) The fact that he was wearing a helmet kept him alive as much as he was. Even so, he had to be put on a respirator because he was not breathing well on his own.

Keep you head up folks!

Edfloat, awesome lightning shot, and especially to get it on your bike ride! What camera were you using and what did you use to support it?

My boss went through the back of a Jetta a few years ago. The car was parked in the bike lane, and he went to ride around the car and his tire got caught up in a crack in the road and he went right through the back window. He was pretty banged up, but if he had been on any taller of a frame he very well could have been killed as he would have likely hit the frame of the car and not the window :/

Biking is definitely dangerous, you have to be very attentive, and hope that everyone around you is just as attentive as you are being.

Hey Simon when you smoke people they will remember ;)

Yeah.....that, and the fact that I'm the only non-Japanese within 10 miles!!!

What tower is that which you posted?

It's a water tower...nothing more interesting.

Way to go Simon!

Cheers Tony.
Can't tell you how pleased I am to have been motivated by your thread to actually get back on my bike, and get out there again.
Lost a pound or so this week....
Hopefully before the baby pops out, I'll be another 2 or 3 lighter still!
Thanks again for the inspiration!

Simon :D

Hey, Simon, glad that we are all getting a bit of an inspiration!

I must admit that even though the circumstances which have pushed me into biking have been anything but positive, once I decided to take the "stance" of being a "biking photographer" it has given me fresh motivation to shoot and a new "set of eyes" as I go!

Great to hear you're also freshly motivated, Tony.
And as someone who, up until the last few months was always "on his bike" at some point in the week, I'm sure you'll love it more and more as the benefits/fun become increasingly apparent.
:-)

Okay. Here are 2 pictures. I don't like to stop while I'm riding (unless I have to), so I took these while I was riding (shot with my SD1200)...

In case you're wondering why I have two cycling computers, I started with the Campy Ergobrain and really like it. But I wanted one that combined the cycling functions with altitude and heart rate monitor, so I got the Polar CS400 (Awesome computer, btw). One of the things I like about the Campy is that you can switch displays from the shifter/brake hoods. I planned to remove it the last time that I changed the handlebar tape because it went over 10,000 miles, but I decided to leave it on. Plus I get a whole lot of info at the same time. I'm not worried about the weight (bike frame is steel, but the complete bike weighs just over 17lbs). Now I will go to watch the Tour de France...

Well gang, I'm getting myself ready to head out on a Biking Photog adventure this afternoon!

I have three "targets" I will aim for:

First is an old cemetery that I've had my eye on -- it was never convenient to stop and park while I was driving, but on a bike it would be quite easy. I like interesting graveyards for photography!

Second, there is an "International Festival" in the same general area, so I can visit that and check it out -- I don't know how interesting it will be, but it is part of the adventure! Colorful booths and such could be nice photo subjects!

And then, not far from this event is a part of the long string of wetlands I've referred to a few times, a section I haven't yet been to, so there I will go, later in the afternoon!

Of course, I won't have my trusty 5D Classic with me, but my good old 30D is at hand and is actually smaller/lighter than my 5D and deserves some lovin' care and attention! And, I'm figuring on bringing my 16-35 and 24-105 so it should have a nice wide-to-medium telephoto range of focal lengths to play with!

Since it's a bright sunny day I'm assuming I won't be needing a flash but if it really comes down to it the pop-up flash on the 30D will suffice for simple day-time fill flash -- it's been a long time since I've shot with this camera and neither the 5D or the 1D3 have a built-in flash so shooting with one is "kind of" a new concept for me:)!

Anyway, wish me a good productive afternoon!
