I'm looking now to get a 230v VBM from PCB, I'm astounded at the difference in price for what is essentially exactly the same unit.

In the US it costs $240=£149
http://www.paulcbuff.com/vagabond.php (external link)

In the EU is costs $495=£310

More than double the price if I buy in the EU.

Doesn't everybody hate Europeans??

Probably has something to do with what it takes to make a unit 220/240v as opposed to 115/120v. Electrical stuff when going from "American" to "European" has to be tricky.

Shipping, and a local distributor add to the cost, plus the fluctuating power of US currency comes into play.

This comes up pretty often.
In the US, they're direct sales...i.e., no middleman.
In the EU, you have a distributor (50% of cost)....this is Business 101...ask one of your business major friends.
In the EU, you have import duties :)
In the EU, you have more taxes than we do in the US :)

Add all that up, and you're probably looking at close to double the cost...

This exactly!

More taxes and middleman equal much higher fees.

More taxes.......This exactly!

To the OP, what is your sales tax, VAT and import duty ? State those as percentage, then it will be easier for us to give an idea of where the added money goes.

By comparison, when I buy a vag mini here, I would pay $240 for the VBM plus $10.64 to UPS ( 7.44 euro ) to have it shipped directly to my home. There would be no other added charges.

Why not just buy European brands? You got Elinchrom back there.

airshaq20: We do, but they don't really compare. The price of the modifiers, no VML, no plm equivalent and most importantly: no competitor for the einstein. At least until they get their act togheter regarding flash durations.

I got both brands. I have not used the Einstein for sports or anything that can use its full potential. Just get a friend or a relative buy one for you and have it shipped back to you.

agreed other than kenyee airshaq and Georges' post.

Davidoff the OP is complaining about the price, how can you say the price is too much on Elinchrom  On top of that PCB does not have an indirect octa bank, deep octa ect ect.

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

I meant it was more expensive if you take as standard the U.S. prices.

Think of it more as an attention grabbing title to encourage responses rather than a statement of fact.

Seems the best way to get this stuff is to have it bought in the US then shipped to the UK - be sure to look at import duty though.

The landed cost to the Uk including shipping and taxes/vat is still only £220+30 and thats for a single item, i assume there would be savings for bulk import. An additional £60 for posting the unit to my door is still alot. The US price will include local taxes i would think too.

Apologies if you think the title is childish, i haven't done anything childish in a very long time :D
