Just bought a Canon Rebel T3 and have Photoshop CS2. Hunted all over the internet and they tell me to get the Camera Raw 3.4 or higher plugin.

Did this, copied the file and pasted it into C:/Program Files/common files/adobe/plugins/CS2/

Started photoshop and tried to import my RAW CR2 file and got the do not recognize this file notice.

I have tried everything I can think of and now would really appreciate your help.

Any help or ideas would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Your camera is fairly new isn't it? 2011?

That old ACR (and Photoshop CS2) might not have the drivers for it..

Can you not use DPP software that came free with your camera?

That's not how you update Camera Raw. Certain versions of Camera raw are limited by the version of Photoshop you are using it in.

You need Lightroom 3.4 (not ACR as you posted) and/or Photoshop CS5 to use your raw files.

Or use Adobe's DNG converter and open in CS2.

The T3's raws were added in ACR at version 6.4, the latest out.

If you want to keep using CS2, The_Shaheen and Merlin_AZ have the best solutions. Either use DPP and convert, or go to DNG and open in CS2. Going to DNG is better imho.

The DNG Converter?? I looked it up and would like a little futher information please... Does this just convert the file from one format to another or does it allow for the manipulation of the photo in the RAW format?

If it just converts, isn't it just easier to stick with JPG? I thought the whole idea was that I would be getting more information and thus more manipulation power in the RAW format?

I am new to all this so please excuse the stupid questions..

BTW: I did try the program that came with the camera, and yes I could use it but was wanting to get the RAW into a program with which I am comfortable, that being Photoshop..

Thanks for your responses. I feel lost, there is so much to learn and I really don't want to upgrade Photoshop, I put all my money into the camera and just expected photoshop would do it's own thing? Stupid me!

DNG is Adobe's Digital Negative format. I'm not sure what requirements DNG has, as I use CS5, but DNG is essentially equal to RAW, and definitely superior to JPG.

DNG is Adobe's RAW format. There is a lot to learn about it but long version short, you can use the free converter and thus work on the DNG files instead of the proprietary Canon RAW files, in the same manner.

Bear in mind that you are missing out on SIGNIFICANT improvements in all regards, using such an old version of Photoshop, no matter what file format you are editing.

THANKS to all who responded. I downloaded the converter and it works great.

Yes I know I am missing lots with the version of Photoshop that I have but it is a give and take issue here. A month ago I had a Sony point and shoot (belonged to my wife) with photoshop CS2 and today I have a Canon Rebel T3 DSLR and photoshop CS2.

I figure that is a significant upgrade for now. Pocket book won't allow for more at this time. Being poor is not fun!! But at least now I can play with and learn about RAW and maybe Santa will be good to me.

Again thanks for all your help.

I completely understand! Adobe has 30 day free trials too from the site, should you ever wish to play around with other stuff.

wilfros,, just use Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP).. It should have come bundled with your camera.. Once installed, it's also upgradable free..

I downloaded the DNG Converter below. I too had cs2 and it wouldn't allow me to open RAW/CR2 images from a Canon T3i. This allowed me to keep the image as a RAW/CR2 file so I could keep all the information that was within the files. I would reccomend this to anyone who may have this problem!
