I'm not sure if this is offensive or not, but the wrinkles in her face are so sharp!! That's extremely impressive. lol.

haha no offense taken. Grandma didn't like the photo, she asked me to smooth the wrinkles out, but I convinced her that they were lines of wisdom

Depending on what you photograph the 85L is very slow to focus. Very accurate, but not good for anything moving.

I can't agree with it ... I use 135L 85L and 300L2.8 for sport, and 85L is working perfectly for moving subject (I have hundreds of samples with 85L focusing and tracking moving (and 4 times faster than any human) subjects
There are many samples in this thread (quad bikes, dogs, dancers, ..).
https://photography-on-the.net …p=12467748&postcount=9913

People don't understand how 85L's AF is working (it's absolutely not linear) and it can even focus when other lenses are hunting (like 135L) for night races ...
...

I would just think that 85L IQ can't be exploited with any crops (on DXOmarks there are some direct comparisons) . So probably, It needs 1DMKIV or FF to be significantly better than other competitors (85F1.8, Sigma 85, 135L).
I bought a 1DMKIII, which make me loose some IQ, but get some more usable AF points than with 5DMKII (U/L/R sensors, down sensors are more erratic).

So, If I was not going to use any FF body in the future, I wouldn't buy 85L ! and keep my money.

I never used 50L as I own a 50F1.4 which I never use (too soft between F1.4 to F2.8 and erratic AF on 5DMKII).

ya... i know.. I really wish that i had the money for the 5D2...

I'm assuming you are close to having enough money if you are considering the 85 L which is over $2K. The 70-200 MK II was a good move, now keep saving for full frame before investing more in glass. In the interim, your current body will work fine, but maybe consider a grip to balance the weight. It doesn't appear that you have a normal range zoom like a 24-xxx or 17-xx. I would be looking at that before a longer fast prime.

85L is sharper at f/1.2 then 50L at f/1.2.

Ya. I have a grip on there (i just forgot to put it in my sig). And no, i have no where near the amount of money i need to buy either of these lenses, i was just trying to get an idea of what to put in my wishlist.

85L. think about down the road and you want to sell this lens, the 50L has "issues" and a lot of people don't care for it. this bs about this lens being too slow to photograph moving things, I've used mine to photograph my borzoi dogs and they move pretty fast. it's not the fastest lens i own, but it's fast enough.

Definitely. I've also heard a lot about the 50 focus shifting.

I wouldn't worry about the focus shifting issue too much... unless you plan to shoot solely around f/2.0-f/2.8. And if that's the case, then you could possibly just MFA for those apertures (later when you get a camera body that has MFA).

The 50L is a love and hate between a lot of people. I haven't really seen focus shift affect too many of my photos to tell you the truth. But I spend most of the time at f/1.2.

1.2

I also have the 85, but I don't lug that around with me currently simply because it's a little long as a walk around for me chasing after my boy. But I'm sure when I get a FF to compliment my crop, the 85 will see more time off the shelf.

Julian, very nice shots.

What'd I recommend is you rent them and try them out on your camera. I should add, the 85L focus speed is fine on a 1DMkIV and 7D, not so fast on a 5D (I borrowed one from a friend to try). I'd strongly recommend you try these out on your camera before buying.

Are you looking for a lens based on the focal length you need?

If you get the 50L, focus shift and all, rest assured that you will be able to sell it just as well as if you were to sell the 85L. The shift is a known attribute, and people will buy the lens regardless.

I just snapped these from my office.

SOOC, no sharpening or PP of any kind, just to show what it looks like at f/1.2, and at f/2.0 which is where some of the focus shift is supposed to start occuring.

the first pic is the original picture, and the other are 100% crops.

edit: eh....I was lazy and just uploaded them through POTN instead of linking them from a flickr account. I think I just wasted my time lol. the pictures look compressed. deleted the comparison shots and posted them in the post after this one using DPP to view 100% crops instead of Picasa.
