I just got done renting a 24-70L for a two-week trip to Germany. I am now a convert! I got the 24-105L as a kit lens and it was sort of "meh" to me, but I am hooked on the 24-70L. According to ExposurePlot software, I took advantage of its entire focal length. The weight was not as bad as I thought it would be. I did find myself wanting/needing IS in some circumstances.

I now find myself at a crossroads of what to do next:

1) Sell my 16-35L for the 24-70L.
2) Keep my 16-35L and "wait and see" if Canon releases a 24-70L II in August.
3) Buy a Tamron 28-75 and keep the 16-35LII?

I intend to limit myself to a 3-lens solution. Heck, from a size/weight perspective I would even consider a 24-70L + 135L combo. But since the 135L is too long for indoor use, I would probably keep my 85 1.8.

I feel like your last suggestion of the 24-75 and the 135 might be your best bet. It will satisfy what you need, while pushing you in a new direction. I don't shoot much prime, but feel like if I had 2 primes, and one zoom, it would eventually end in only primes. I feel like this is where I may be headed. Just my thoughts.

That is only a rumor after all. It is reasonable to think that Canon will fit the IS on the next upgrade. But I am sure not in the near future, due to the earthquake/tsunami in Japan. They are still trying to keep up with the shortage on the market and rebuilding their production line at the same time. There are things more important that bring out the MKII version of the lens.

i finally understand how the 24-70 truly shines on a FF. if you liked it so much i would just buy one. 16-35 and 24-70 would be a good combo. and then get a 70-200 f2.8 to complete your 2.8 zoom trinity!

Yeah there might be a new 24-70 but think of all the misses shots you could have had. If you ask me, keep your 16-35, save up and get the 24-70. Save some more for that third lens to finish your set.

You already have the 16-35L so just get a nice prime instead of 24-70. Something more like 35L or 50L or 85L. I have the 24-70 and it's my least lens I used and I'm probably going to sell it soon.

I have also rented primes, the EF 35L and 135L, included. The former didn't jive with me as much as the latter. I think I am finding that I prefer primes more on the tele end of things like the 85 and 135 whereas I prefer the flexibilty of a zoom on the wide and normal ends.

The Tamron is no slouch in the IQ department; it can be down right fantastic. I've had two of them and my latest version continually surprises me with its sharpness. If a normal zoom were to be my primary lens, however, I'd probably opt for the 24-70L simply for the build quality.

I considered the Tamron but read about vignetting on the 5DII -- is this quite noticeable and do you see this as a problem?

Definite vignetting, but I personally don't mind the light fall off. It just really depends on the subject matter.
