Windows rejecting film scanner

I use a Minolta Scan Dual 4 film scanner with Vista64. About a year ago I got word of and used a driver that allows it to be recognized in Vista since there is no Vista or newer driver for it.

But About a week ago it wasn't recognized when starting the scanning software with the dreaded Error 1 which causes reinstallation of the scanning software. This takes 2 reboots of my computer. And today it got back to that same error 1 and another uninstallation and reinstallation of software plus 2 reboots. All I can think of is a Windows update was installed that rejects non-digitally signed drivers which this driver is.

Any other thoughts? I really dont want to spend 15 minutes messing with my scanner every time I want to use it!

do you have another older computer you can link the scanner to? you can always transfer files later

The whole point of finding the Vista driver was to eliminate needing an old computer, so no thanks.

I tried VueScan once and did not like its very limited scanning controls.
