So the wife gave me a go ahead to buy whatever i want ... don't you hate when that happens?

i've read all the threads of the lenses in the thread title ... but even those threads have no concensus.

options:

50 1.2
-bigger aperture of course
-no regret about not getting the L lens

50 1.4
-95% the performance for 1/3 the price is hard to argue with
-wife is actually leaning towards this

don't buy 50 mm and use 35L on crop
-now i tried this already with the 7D, and because i didn't like the 7D much, it didn't get much use.
-i could save up for a 1d4 in lieu of a 5D3/3D :p

thoughts?

I'd go for the Sigma, but in the end you'll be satisfied either way.
Since the 50mm F1.2L has no weather sealing, I don't really see a point in getting it over the Sigma - F1.2 vs F1.4 is not exactly a huge difference that'd justify the premium price in my eyes.

A good photographer can take extraordinary photos anywhere, with any camera and any lens while a mediocre one will take mediocre ones everywhere, with every camera and every lens.
Never limit yourself with what others think you should do. Shoot what you find interesting, exactly the way you want to.

I'd go sigma, the extra 5% performance isn't worth the 220% increase in price to me.

The L will always have resale value and you'll never wonder it if it was you or the lens.... You get what you pay for in the end.

You may want to save a few bucks and get a Sony Camera too.......

Now I'm not saying to pick one over another... but I'm just curious on the bolded portion. Wouldn't the 50L be weather-sealed once you slap a filter in the front? Else what's the point of the rubber mount seal? :)

(And no... weather sealing does not justify $1000 more, unless you shoot in the rain forest w/ a 1D(s) body.)

I love the 50L but I am sure the Sigma is very good and a lot cheaper but you may want to do a search. This question gets asked all the time and to be honest it never really gets answered.

For me I just decided I would stick with all Canon stuff and IMO the 50L performs very well.

I shot with a friend's sigma. And I really liked it. Performance, it's hard to tell the dif by looking at pictures. I think the Sigma is a bit quicker AF.

if you need put put the cash some where else, then get the sigma. If not, it wont hurt to go to the L.

I think you would be happy with either one of those lenses. I have tried both and they are both great. The problems the 1.2 had early on have all but been solved. My copy was super sharp at 1.2, when it hit focus.

Another option if you do not mind manual focusing is the Zeiss 2.0 which easily blows those two lenses mentioned out of the water. That is the lens i ended up with and have no regrets. The Zeiss on the 5D-2 is pure magic!!!

Get the Sigma 50 and use the extra dough on either the 85 or 150 Macro

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.
