I don't think you did anything wrong; the image simply isn't finished.

In photoshop: adjust the perspective (those leaning buildings on the left), crop it a little, hit "auto-levels" and sharpen a bit. In total that takes less than 1 minute.

Almost every image from a consumer-grade digital camera needs some levels adjustment and sharpening. The leaning buildings result from your low shooting angle, and unless you shoot from high up in another building this will be a problem. These are not your faults - you are doing fine.

Optional:
There's a bit of a cyan cast to the buildings which you can leave or remove. You can further tweak the hue/saturation or selective color sliders to warm up the image a bit (e.g., add some yellow and red to the neutrals.) This add another 30 seconds of post-processing - not bad at all.

:)

I just got in and see your post of that scene in new york again niloligist

I had this here ready for days
and wondered should I send it,
as you might be insulted
but now you have posted this topic again
>
here it comes ... ............
I never usually do this with anyone's picture
( as I know nuthing ) but did this time.
maybe its because 'I love new york'

want to say also, that your macro flower shots are really good and getting wonderful

remember , this(following) message was 'written' days and days ago . I just left it in 'drafts '
(and now it has a cold :)
***************
niloligist,

I loved this picture of yours and would love to see it left like it .
but the tops of the buildings are slightly slanted. among other few things,
I started messing about with it
(me ??? : )
yes, but in the nicest manner !
not as in 'throwing it around ' you understand.

you may do a much better job if going down this road of cropping etc.
: )

when I left in most of what was there ,
after cropping the side building on the left,
it still didn't look as I thought it should.

then I had it so narrowed down that it nearly fell over .
leaving the high buildings in the centre in the picture

I did love the scene as you showed it, make no mistakes. and could see what you were showing.
only it was a bit dark and a few other things.

but its what you want and want to see,
is all that matters most of the time.
I looked at it a lot, because I loved it.
but you know how it is, you wallop and correct your kids because you love them .....
ha ha ha
joke joke
only kidding
( in case joke joke is not understood )

after a little while , this is what I thought maybe would show off whats best..... in the reflections and the scene in the foreground .
its still fairly dark,
but to capture the reflections that had to be (I think)

though I love those special buildings I didn't think they were adding to the scene properly in this instance
(methinks only)
now I suppose it does not show anything to say it is new york, those buildings always make such a great statement.
but you'll have plenty more opportunities for great shots you intend to photograph
(so long as you are not mugged )
or even your tripod stolen, worse again

regards

marie

apologies too >
I said I thought that the other picture of ny (posted elsewhere) was a 'dusk' shot.
I only saw later where you had 'dusk' in the subject line.
how daft can we get,
how daft can 'I' get : )
maybe this picture is a guilt trip for me over that,
so accept it
or............

good luck with all your pictures

and never lose the energy

: )

best wishes
marie

marie,

That was sweet, I understand where you went with my photo, I like it. Thanks for taking the time, and your post will help me next time.

See, I don't know anything, I am basically fooling around in the dark. I am learning it is just taking a while. I am working on taking clear photos first, then I will learn how to compose the photo, then I will get into the fancy stuff.

Thanks for sharing it does help and I do want help, so don't worry.

Frederique
