Hi,

I've been testing the 60D and already own the 7D and after a few days have come to this conclusion:

  • 7D faster and more accurate autofocus + it has the option to keep hold of focus better
  • 60D better image quality and all my lenses seem to just work and don't need MFA

I know the 7D should have the same IQ but it just doesn't, some of my best images have been taken with the 60D in the last few days, and I cannot have got that much better that quickly.

Oh and one more thing, although my kindly wife has let me buy both (as I really wanted to test Magic Lantern Focus Trap (which is rubbish by the way!)) she has rightly said I must sell one.

What would you do?

Keep the 7D ! Unless you value the tilt LCD screen for video mode and need some more cash on hand for other purpose!

Very difficult decision! My instinct would be to delve more into the workings of the 7D as it is definitely a better and more capable camera. You should be able to get images at least as good on the 7D as you do on the 60D. Whether it be post processing or in camera settings, it must be possible.

What do you shoot the most of?

Sell both bodies, the 10-22, and get a 1D3 or a 5D2?

7D will be superior in many ways over the 60D.
That said I am very happy I opted for the 60D giving me extra funds for the 430 EXII.

lol, at dump the wife, although do remember she did let me buy both to test :)

As to what I shoot I do some wildlife/BiF, but mostly its family shots which given the speed a toddler can move are pretty similar... but... I have had some cracking shots such as this lot, so the 60D is not lacking, I just end up throwing more images away.

While technically both should have the same IQ I would say go with the one that you feel is giving you the best images and that you will be most happy shooting with. If you are looking at both then there are probably some features on the 7D that you may not need, so no need to pay extra for them. With the leftover money you can take the wife to dinner and still have some left to put toward something else.

Well it seems like your happy with the 60D. I say sell the 7D and take the Family on a little vacation with the money you sell it for. Your lens line up looks good and I can't think of anything else you might need except for maybe a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I don't use 60D, have only test shot with one a little... But did use 50D a lot and I think the two have the same AF system.

You can learn to use the 60D's AF for your purposes. 7D's AF system might give you a little higher keeper rate with fast moving subjects such as the BIF. But with practice I bet you can get pretty close to same results with 60D.

7D and 60D IQ should be near identical. Perhaps the 60D come from factory with more carefully calibrated AF, since they lack Micro Focus Adjust. Before making a final decision, perhaps you should do a proper MFA with several of your lenses on 7D, then re-evaluate it.

I don't really think 7D is necessarily "superior". Sure, it's got more features... If you actually have use for them. It might be more durably built and better sealed... which might be valuable considerations to someone who shoots a lot and works under tough conditions. It's heavier... And bigger. And of course more expensive.

For you (or anyone else), the 60D might actually be the "superior" camera. Forget the hype, get what pleases you most and feels the best, then go shoot more images. You appear to be getting good results with the 60D.

What the heck are the critters in the 2nd and 4th shots, above?

Thank you all - I did sort out the 7D MFA (what a faf that was!!) and found that a +3 lens just worked on the 60D, so theres some magic going on there.

yourdoinitwrong & Saint728 - I can believe my wife bribed one of you.... but both!! :D

Funny as I'm writing this and my previous statement I'm finding myself wanting to defend the 60D, so sort of answering my own question.

One other thing I may end up doing is adopting the pray and prey method when doing high speed shots rather than the sniper method I was using with the 7D.

As to money, if I sell the 7D I can get a big climbing frame for the kids. now if ever there was a brownie point earner that has to be it!

I swear your wife didn't bribe me! :) There are just a lot of times when you see recommendations on here for more than what the person actually needs. I have a 7D and think it's a great camera but that doesn't mean the 60D isn't a good camera or fit the needs of a lot of people. There is always the "want" factor that goes into a purchase which can't be quantified too. I'm certainly guilty of that. I didn't absolutely "need" the 7D but I really wanted one and I do shoot sports so that's how I justified it to myself. Whichever way you go you will have a good camera.

I've heard many folks say that you really need to read up on the 7d and fully understand it to get the best out of it. Its a pretty advanced camera. But like Saint said, go with what you're happy with, and the 60d sounds like it fits the bill just fine.
