Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a sturdy ballhead for use with a monopod capable of supporting a 5D mkii and a 100mm-400mm lens.

thanks all.

Why a ballhead on a monopod for that combo? The 100-400 has a tripod mounting ring for going into portrait orientation. Just get a tilt head like Manfrotto's 234 or 234RC2 or the RRS MH-01. The MH-01 might be overkill for that combo, but you won't need to upgrade (assuming you use the A-S plates). Manfrotto's 234 comes in versions that are threaded for 1/4"-20 tripod screws or that accept the RC2 QR plate.

Not a pan-tilt. A simple tilt head.

Manfrotto 234RC2 (external link)

The RRS MH-01 (external link) is similar but substantially sturdier (75 lb. vs. 6 lb. rating)

At around 1/10 the price of the RRS, yep. Although when I was using the 3229 (predecessor ID for the 234RC2), I found the camera/lens combo would swivel when I carried the complete rig over my shoulder. Never had that problem with the MH-01, even with my 300 2.8 and a 1D3.

Had a look at the 234rc it seem to hold 2.5 kg, i think i'd like something a bit stronger then that.

The RRS MH-01, or maybe a Manfrotto 496 ball head (or Flashpoint F2 or F3, or a variety of other A-S compatible ballheads) might be a better choice. The RRS is, I'll freely admit, the high-end option. But once you've bought it, you'll never need to replace it.
