Redheaded Woodpecker
My first encounter seeing red was last fall during park watch patrol as a volunteer at the Gettysburg Battlefields. One of the prime locations to catch a fast glimpse was the big oak trees in the woods behind Devil Den. Red just can’t resists the big acorn lying on the ground. After many months of hiking and stalking this very hard to pin down character (never stays in one place for long) I finally got my chance this week to shoot a few images. Hope you enjoy the images as much I enjoyed taking them.

Wayne

Now that's a true red headed woodpecker. Great shots. The woodpeckers we have around here only have red on part of their head, not really sure what the actually name of them would be.
What lens did you shoot with?

Canon Rebel T1i, 18-55, 55-250, EF-S 10-22, Canon 100 mm F2.8 macro, Manfrotto tripod & monopod, Canon 100-400mm, Lightroom 4, Canon 7D, Canon EF 28-135mm

Everything has beauty but not everyone sees it...Confucius

I hear a woodpecker in my yard pretty often. However, I can't find him. The houses and trees bounce the sound of his pecking, and it's real hard to pinpoint his location! I'll find him eventually, and get some shots!

And....awesome shots! Very sharp!

Litespeed, you might be seeing a Red-Bellied woodpecker, very common in south central PA. I used the 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L lens with a 40D body.
Thanks everyone for looking in.

The read heads don't seem to be as common as they were in the 70's. They're a beautiful bird. Nice shots.

The redhead is a beauty. I expect to visit Gettysburg in the fall, would love to see one. We just don't have them around here.

When you come north to visit Gettysburg shoot me a pm so I can point you in the right direction. Better yet I’ll take you there and give you the 50-cent tour of the whole battlefield. By the way your web site photos are top rate.

Thanks, Wayne, that's very kind of you. I'm guessing it will be in September, will pin it down as it approaches.
