Too washed out?? Does it matter that the arm was cut off?

Just a little background on the client. He's a buddy of mine that does stand up comedy. This is my first headshot gig and I want to improve from this experience so fire away on the CC. Thanks in advance!

ps - lens used was a mix of 50mm 1.4 and 24-105 on the shots above.

Knowing that he is a stand up comedian, I like the last one. It has just enough distortion to be fun but is still useable headshot for him. 1 and 2 are too hot on his face. Rather, they have some very hot, hot spots. I do like 1 over number 2 though, again, knowing what he does for a living. The expression in 1 just seems more genuine.

i agree... i was trying something new on the last one figured it could distort just a little and would still work since he is a comic and a standard formal headshot might not be what some of the agencies are looking for.

As for the hot spots, it was a lot worse than expected since it was really hot and there was no MUA. His gf was kind enough to dabble a little of her make up to help get rid of the shine.

Aside from the hot spots is there anything else i can do to make it better?

All together they're pretty good. I definitely think that 1 and 2 are too hot, particularly 1. His forehead, nose and cheek are definitely overexposed, as I don't have to point out to you. My suggestion for that is to actually pack some make up for those cases, just some light powder to soften that shine, and then re-shoot.

The thing I noticed that you could work on to improve, is that there is very little head space in these shots. Giving a little more room around the head will greatly improve the composition.

Also this is just an observation, but when I opened up the thread and saw 1 I immediately thought he was pulling a mask off his face, as if his skin was rubber :)

Altogether you've got some pretty decent shots, and I can see you getting a lot better from this experience, and I'd personally say my favourite, especially considering the context, is 3.
